The prebuilds are being sold for insane amounts.
Guess I will wait. 3090 holding strong.Comment

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
and I can say, it's game dependent of course, but now on my 49" ultrawide I can, on most games, just set everything max and it looks fantastic. some require a bit of adjustment and still look great.
then there's cyberpunk who seemingly always wants more, lol
I am more than happy with the 5080. If you got a 3090 then you're good, so is anyone else, I am very happy with this, it gets more amazing each game, I absolutely am glad I did it, but I will say, it's of course a luxury, and I'm ok with that.
I also consider myself very fortunate to have this card, I come from humble beginnings back in the early Atari days so I know there are tons of issues in gaming, but I just have so much more excitement about it, sitting here playing games and tuning out all the noise
It's a wonderful time to have this hobby, it's crazy, its wildly erratic in cost, but that don't make it badStreaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
I also must say, the resolution and FPS isn't at all the story to think about with these cards.
If you have ever doubted raytracing, turned it off because it's just too much, and yeah I did that quite a bit with my 4080 to get a better framerate but I hated it...
Well this card is really a major upgrade I think because of the raytracing and mirrors and polish on floors and texture detail is way, way better than on 4080
I think it's because the comparison they do is a linear one, but it seems as if, weirdly enough, these newer cards seem to thrive more on more detail
So although the resolution, frame rate may be the same on a 4080 vs 5080 there are a lot of major differences (luxuries) in regards to full raytracing and then you add the far, far better micro-detail and it really is a big visual difference.
But apples to apples frame rates are just, whatever they are, as you have said, studies show a leap of I think 15% but judging by how these cards work (turning down things often doesn't help frame rate, but you have to fiddle, it seems that often using all Ultra works just as well as using Medium, I know, it's all kinds of weird but that is the AI aspect
We will see, but yeah, don't listen to the naysayers, it of course is way overpriced, it's not as big of a leap as we all hoped, but it's still darned well worth it if you can afford it
If anyone wants to just see what I mean, instead of reading about it, look in my signature and watch some recent videos as I have been posting a lot of videos of the best games on PC since I got the 5080

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
What are your temps like with the Asus 5080 Shaun? I recently upgraded from an Asus TUF 3080 to the 5080 FE thanks to the NVIDIA priority access lotto. The 5080 runs everything much better in almost all aspects. More frames, temps are lower, less power draw.
MH Wilds especially has been a way better experience with frame generation. I can hardly notice the latency difference with frame gen on or off in that game. Alan Wake 2 was unplayable though with frame gen on. The latency did not feel good at all. Maybe it's because I played AW2 with mouse and keyboard where it's more noticeable and MH Wilds with controller.Comment

The 4080 was about 67-70 celsius at everything maxed
The 5080 is about 60-62 at everything maxed.
Do note I have the physically largest card (I have a full tower) with a 4th fan (they say is worthless as it only cools 2 degrees, uh ok but how is that worthless, whatever) and this crazy cooling internal system
I think it's just a big chunk and that is a big part of it.
You know I've played a ton of games and I believe now, that some games, it's not the card, it's the game, or the programming.
Because it seems nigh impossible for me to run every game maxed out, even with raytracing, everything, and it works good, if not great, sometimes max 240 hz
But yet that white whale, the Cyberpunk, humiliated me when I maxed everything out and went in...1 FPS............and it was so slow I had to sit there and wait until it exited.
I eventually hit Alt-F4 and exited. I sat and just cried for hours. Just kidding, I just went back in and turned off a few things here and lowered everything on Raytracing to Medium, from Ultra and that did it
So this card runs raytracing max on many games PERFECT. So it's the devs IMO that is why a 5090 exists
I bet even a 5090 couldn't do that game max.
That's not the only game though, there's a couple of other, minor games, where the RT isn't optimized but it works.
I have to say, raytracing and lighting, the way they were until recently, were likely never going to ultra, so at least this card can do it on most. I think the raytracing coding has come a long way as well, the newer games do it far better than older.

I have been watching, it's 7 degrees cooler, however I still do have my case open, when I close the case I think it goes to 4 degrees cooler.

The naming convention is a little confusing. It seems like some devs opt to refer to path tracing as full ray tracing at times when the game already has at least some ray tracing built into the game. So people don't always realize when they're turning on this god tiered graphics mode, lol.
You kind of need the full suite of DLSS features and one of their highest end cards to sniff a smooth enough feeling frame rate with some of these graphics options. I'd be interested to get your opinion on the new multi frame gen tech for a game like Cyberpunk. It would seem like you need at least a 180hz or higher monitor for the feature to be able to stretch its legs properly, but I'm really curious to try out the 3x and 4x frame gen to see how the latency feels. Now, more than everComment

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
Yeah, path tracing will still bring any card to its knees. Indiana Jones and Black Myth Wukong are similar recent examples of this as well, with their full ray traced or path traced modes. I wanna say Alan Wake 2 also utilizes a form of path tracing now, but I'm not 100% sure on that one.

I also find issue with terminology, it is ALL over the map, and in some games they make it so you pick DLSS and you must pick quality, balanced, etc, but other games you pick DLSS and no upscaling, so there needs to be standardized graphic options across the industry I think
I'm in telecom and it's just sort of insane at this point, everything has different names that are the same thing and it causes total confusion constantly.
I also think, to add to even more uncertainty, some games now have photo mode, but it's a mode in which path tracing, etc are utilized the same as any other option, but you are only going to get 1 to 10 fps because it's a photo mode basically, and one game that has this is Cyberpunk 2077
That game is an epic game, but for people like me it has become a benchmark sort of, LOL, reminds me of Wing Commander in the 90's and Crysis more recently
I use it more as a bench, but i really should game more in that world as it truly is epic.
One reason I actually left PC gaming was the options were just so great, I spent more time on that then gaming. No more though, I think I'm definitely PC first, when money permits of course

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
One thing of note to all, don't go too much by the FPS when you first enter a game using an RTX card, the 4080 would go into a game at like 45 fps, then get up to maybe 55-60 fps after the AI settled in and started to work
This card is even a larger difference, you can literally see the AI and how it works.
Last night went into Cyberpunk 2077 and was getting a solid 47-48 fps, not that great at all, but I was hoping it'd get better so i played on
After about 30 seconds I was at about 80 fps, and then it stayed that way for the rest of that session, so we went from 47 to 80, a much wider margin than the 4000 cards.
When you get into a game at first I think you need to play it a solid 5 minutes to see where you are before making any graphical adjustments.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

Newegg is offering a great deal on trade-ins right now, so I’m going to use it as an opportunity for a modest upgrade to a 5070ti. There’s a decent chance prices only get worse from here anyway, so I think an AIB card in the $800s might be as good as it gets for a while. Now, more than everComment

You can easily get $750+ selling it to someone. $500 is nothing. I sold my 3080 for $400 cash a couple weeks ago when I got my 5080.Comment
