    Re: PlayStation 4 Discussion

It's Official: PS4 Will Not Feature Used Game DRM Like Xbox One

This clears up a few things:
1.) The PlayStation 4 can play games offline without having to be online. This was clarified the day of the PS4's reveal back on February 20th.
2.) Sony will not have any mandatory DRM for used games. You can buy, play, trade used games on the PlayStation 4 just as usual. No additional registration fees, pay-walls or internet registration required.
3.) If you so choose, you can play games from disc, download them from the digital store or remote load them. Sony doesn't mandate any method over the other for multi-format titles.
4.) Just for extra clarification the PlayStation 4 does not and will not require a constant always-on internet connection.

I read somewhere that they could possibly leave it up to the developers, who would all probably opt for it since they will for 360, still making it the same used game situation.

I'm not buying any of this yet.

I just don't see how it could work if one system has it and the other doesn't. Developers are going to prefer the XBox One; gamers will prefer the PS4. Something's gotta give.

That's exactly what the article says. We'll see how publishers handle it, but at least you'll be able to choose DRM-free games ...

SWEET!!! No more disk for me, can't stand swapping them in and out my console. I'm going to sign up on PS Plus also when the PS4 comes out, hopefully we get some good deals on some of the games.

Do you think you even need to ask?

If EA knows they can get a significant amount of money, they'll try it.

Anyone know why Amazon US has PS4 games for $99.99? Is this just a price point so they can allow preorders to begin?

They did that for WiiU as well. It's simply because a price point hasn't been announced yet. If they list the games at $59 and they end up $69, amazon gets screwed on reserves. Amazon always gives you lowest price from preorder date till it ships anyway.

I have always been a Sony first guy, but after hearing Microsoft's arrogance towards keeping their gaming crowd and not showing games because they will buy the system anyway I was definitely set on the PS4.

I like to keep my options open, but Microsoft is turning a lot of the serious customers away. Hopefully E3 will clear everything up for both systems.

                              Re: PlayStation 4 Discussion

I may be in the minority now, but I still prefer having physical copies of every game I buy. As a collector that's just what I do. But I also feel as though that physical copy offers me some security in that my game won't randomly disappear. I don't have a problem with steam and I have downloaded many games from the PS Store, so I'm not adamantly opposed to digital games, I just prefer if possible to have a physical copy. My hope is we won't see a permanent digital distribution in the future, but I somewhat expect it and I understand the reasons for it.

As for the used game market, Sony's direction in that regard definitely falls in line with them making the gamer first in their minds. I admit I occasionally buy used games, but I only do so when Gamestop offers the B2G1 deals (hard to pass up a free game). Otherwise I tend to wait until a new game's price has dropped down say a year or so down the line (or until a sale occurs). I don't think every game has an equivalent value despite them all being priced the same. I limit my full-price purchases to games I know for certain are worth the cost.

If the used game market disappeared for consoles I wouldn't be that upset; I know it has evaporated in the PC market. Gamestop and similarly situated stores, however, would lose a gigantic chunk of their retail operations. I don't know the numbers but I have to imagine used-game sales accounts for more than 50% of their profits. They probably have a fair amount of clout in the industry to try and limit the disappearance of used games for consoles.

From a consumer standpoint, Sony is smart to come out and say "we won't limit you," but you have to wonder if that has any effect on development--I certainly hope not.

I like having physical copies of my games too. Most of the newer games I have bought the last few years were a few months after launch half price from original list or BF sales in the 25 buck range. The only exception was a full price launch day purchase of MLB The Show 13 digital copy.
