Jonathan Blow: A clarification about our PS4 exclusivity - The Witness

Our deal with Sony is a limited-time exclusivity that applies to competing console platforms. Basically it is that you will see the game on the PlayStation 4 for a while before you will see it on the Wii U or the rumored next Microsoft console. (We haven’t been disclosed on Microsoft’s next console, so I don’t know anything about that platform besides the rumors that are on the internet).

This exclusivity does not prevent us from being on the PC or iOS at launch, for example.

To launch a high-spec version of the game on a console, it came down to a choice between the next Microsoft console or the next Sony console. There were people at Sony who really liked the game and were keeping in touch with us about it, and so we naturally started going to their PS4 developer events, got a dev kit, and started playing with it. I don’t have good communication with anyone at Microsoft right now, but all our technical people like the PS4 specs a lot more than the leaked Durango specs, and we like the positioning of the PS4 (it’s about games) more than what we perceive Microsoft’s positioning is going to be.

I'm not sure I saw much from his game that would seem be particularly taxing to either system.

I don't think it has anything to do with being dumb and young, you can't justify the purchase. I can think of a lot of things that can be purchased for $500 that provide a lot less entertainment. Everyone is different.

Im glad I got way more money now than I did 7-8 years ago. Im no where near rich but paying $500-$600 for something I really want (like the PS4) is not that much to me, especially if I got 7-8 months to save. Now 7 years ago I would have been stressed about the price but not now. I am definitely getting the more expensive version of the PS4 come this fall.

That's a big statement, but it also could be somewhat biased. From the leaked 720 info, the 720 looks to me to be something like the Wii. They may get in a lot of households, but they will end up thrown on the junk pile or not being used. Junk pile is an exaggeration, but it looks like Sony will win the gaming war this time.

The PS2 is my favorite console of all-time. In the middle of that consoles life cycle if you would have told me that I wasn't going to ever by a PS3, I would have thought you were crazy, but that's what happened. It was all about the games, especially early in the life cycle of the console.

The PS2 had at least 50 exclusive RPGs, Does the PS3 even have more than 10? Even if they do, only a few of those have been well received.

Great series like, Suikoden, Shadow Hearts, Grandia, Wild Arms, Xenosaga, Dark Cloud and others never made an appearance. I know that things happen to publishers and developers that cause series to disappear, but other games didn't step in to fill the void in that genre.

From what we've seen so far, the specs of the PS4 seem strong, I just hope that they come back strong in the RPG market.

SEGA is making games for the PS4, the better bring back some of their classics like Sword of the Beserk: Guts Rage, and my favorite Shenmue!

This is some exciting news. Companies like Frozenbyte working on PS4 games tells me that the console truly does cater to developers and Sony's PR department wasn't blowing smoke up our asses. Bottom line, if the developers are as excited about this console as I have heard / read over the past few weeks, I'm definitely excited.

At this point, the only thing that will stop me from getting one on release day is a price tag greater than $500.

No way in hell I buy at 500.00.
350.00 is probably the limit. Anything more and I'll wait for all the bugs to be fixed and a good supply of games and by then the price will hopefully have dropped.

I need to see games in actions and will base it off that.

I agree, Sony really learned from their mistakes with the PS3 and it seems like they are addressing everyone of them and beyond! Even down to including a headset with the PS4! You can tell Sony worked with the developers to build this console because thats what this event was all about. The developers/games were the stars of this conference. They emphasized how all the developers had to do was concentrate on creating and not worry about technical limitations. I am very excited about this system.

Early days, but I really do get this feeling the PS4 will be to go to console for this generation. Everyone seems impressed, the specs are good, the developers seem to love it.

Obviously Microsoft need to make their move before we can really start comparing, but Sony seem to have set the bar on this one. Going by earlu rumours, and having a little dig, it seems this time round the Xbox will be the so called 'expensive media player' that people labelled the PS3 as in its early days.

One thing I want to say quickly going off-topic, it's sad to how Nintendo have turned into a complete and utter shadow of their former selfs. It's Sony and Microsoft now.
