Re: PlayStation 4 Discussion
When playing disc-based games on PS4, do I need to install data to the hard drive?
Yes, all PS4 Blu-ray Disc games must be cached to the hard drive to ensure a smooth gaming experience. However, certain titles may not require you to wait for the game data to be fully cached before starting gameplay. In order to start playing disc-based games, users will need to insert the game disc into PS4 just like on the PS3 system.Comment

Re: PlayStation 4 Discussion
So, will the cache automatically dump installs on games that I'm not currently playing or refresh itself automatically in some way? Mandatory installs of 40-50gb makes the 500GB HDD seem a lot smaller and I'd rather not have to manage my space at launch.

I think you'll have to manage it yourself like PS3 I'm guessing.Comment

Re: PlayStation 4 Discussion
For those who have previously swapped out and upgraded their PS3 hard drives before- can you transfer your previous saves from the old hard drive to the new one via PC?
I'm going all digital and trying to understand how this works.Comment

Re: PlayStation 4 Discussion
Found what I was looking for. I think somebody posted this already as I remember reading it in here, but couldn't find it.

Those worried about needing a bigger hard drive after it was revealed that Call of Duty: Ghosts would need 50GB of space on the hard drive, and Knack would need 37GB shouldn’t worry – while it needs that space, it won’t take it up, simply caching the install instead.
That means as you play, it will install and delete data, saving you a lengthy install time and valuable hard drive space. Essentially then, you’ll have at least 400GB of space on your hard drive to do what you want with.

Re: PlayStation 4 Discussion
This is what I'm expecting. They're just calling installs something different because of the different tech/don't have to wait for it to complete to play.
If they didn't then you might have to wait several minutes for a level to be 'cached' before playing every time you put the disc in.

Re: PlayStation 4 Discussion
Sony already had the files on their website and the .PUPs have already been taken out of their containers and differences in their file structures noted and being worked on.
The 1.50 update is just over 307 MB while the original is around 850 MB. The custom firmware scene isn't a malicious scene, nor does hacking/jailbreaking your console have anything to do with hacks of PSN or anything like that. That's just the work of some *******s that line to ruin things and could be done regardless if the ps3/ps4 is a modded console or not.badComment

I haven't seen where this is explained fully..Comment

Re: PlayStation 4 Discussion
Yeah, it'll be cool after release to have guys show us how this works and how it's managed.
That could suck if you buy a lot of games and swap regularly....or if you do the Digital versions as well. 500 GB goes away fast without external help.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

I won't be going digital with my 2MB down internet connection but I feel for those who have that option as a luxury.Comment

Re: PlayStation 4 Discussion
I also don't quite understand how it works. From what I gather there is a reserved 50GB Cache on the hard drive that all games will use for temporary storage. Since this is only temporary, one game's cache will be wiped whenever you play a different game.
I don't exactly know what that means if anything in terms of performance. I also don't know if this is excessive writing and re-writing on the hard drive that would cause damage or performance loss with the drive itself, or at least make it degrade faster. Perhaps it is nothing at all.Comment

Re: PlayStation 4 Discussion
true, so it should be stated "The PS4 will not support expanding storage with an external hard drive at launch"Comment
