With today's news that Hitman 2 will be a PS+ Sept offering, you can now play it in VR (Naturally, you'll need Hitman 3 to do so). The original Hitman was a previous PS+ Free offering in the past which is also available in VR if you have 3.

Frontiers Update for No Man's Sky released.

With today's news Sony welcomes Firesprite to Sony Studios, I don't anticipate any news or games for tomorrows reveal but the Liverpool successful team, should be a staple for giving us more VR alternatives for NGVR with Sony's backing.

Interesting take from Brian PSVR Without Parole regarding yesterday's showcase which they usually don't jump to conclusions. I don't believe it's for NGVR but maybe current PSVR? Anyways, here's at least some new breaking news.

“Sony acquired Firesprite which is the ex-Studio Liverpool studio that made WipEout,” said Nick. “I have been told that they are working on a Horizon VR game.”

When asked if this new Horizon VR game is a Forbidden West or Zero Dawn VR, Nick replied, “I asked, I said is it Forbidden West VR? Is it Zero Dawn VR? It’s a separate thing set in the Horizon universe that is VR.”

                    Re: PS VR

Sony seems to be announcing a number of studio acquisitions lately. News that Firesprite has purchased Fabrik Games to it's lineup should help boost with another first-party lineup for NGVR.

With the addition of Fabrik to Firesprite, the new PlayStation studio now has a headcount of 265, with numerous additional positions now being offered. We still don't know what its first project under the Sony banner will be, though between The Persistence and The Playroom, the studio has a lot of VR and AR experience. Perhaps we'll learn more when Sony is ready to reveal PSVR 2 and its new game lineup, which is expected to happen in early 2022, according to speculations.

                      Re: PS VR

VR/AR now considered 'mainstream' according to current research, with massive growth expected over the next 5 years.

I do wonder in the consumer space what the appetite is for products like the Vive (price $1400) and PSVR2 (wired, exclusivity) but overall a good thing for VR enthusiasts and for both HTC and Sony given their current investments. The appetite is there, absolutely, just wondering how much of this is largely just driven by Oculus.

Personally I've started using my Quest 2 for working out 3x / week w/ very tangible results. Never been happier with VR.

I think my dream for VR would be for Sony to pivot on the PSVR2, make it an expandable platform (cost-conscious base unit with optional wireless, fit upgrades, etc) that isn't exclusive to their consoles, and position it between the $399 Quest 2 and $1400 Vive. Doing that with their platform is the difference to me between carving out a home in the space for just your subset of users, or aggressively growing the medium and expanding your platform's user base. This would lean into their efforts to expand the reach of some of their IP also.

My Quest 2 is great otherwise, would take a lot to ever go back to a wired experience again.

                        Re: PS VR

Very much with you regarding a wireless solution however, I don't think we're quite there yet especially as the games become more and more sophisticated. We can attach a wireless adapter to the PS5 but we're trying to keep costs down and the prices out there for some adapters are at least $300 and up which would put a major disadvantage in a cost-conscious hope towards expenses. At the moment, the best headsets recommended are wired. Plus, if you're engaging in online activity, signal loss still poses a problem.

Here's a recent comparative study that was done regarding presence, immersion, experiences, cybersickness, advantages and disadvantages. It's getting closer....

Based on the anecdotal evidence, the wireless solution presents an advantage towards the standard HMD setup. Users are less likely to trip or get wrapped up in the cables, as well as researchers don’t have the need to supervise participants so closely to ensure they would not fall or disconnect the equipment by stretching the cables. However, signal interference presents a problem that has to be solved and controlled before fully adopting wireless solutions.

What would you think if Sony announced they were taking this gen off for VR?

Was talking to a friend about it earlier today (I'm obviously pessimistic about their platform / approach) and given costs, supply issues that are expected to continue in 2022 among other factors that it could make more sense for an indefinite delay (penciling it in as a PS6 peripheral) rather than doing it now. The concern is that if they're not successful it could go the way of the Vita - leading to Sony leaving the VR space entirely like they did with mobile gaming, IPTV, etc.

In 5-7 years, all the involved tech (I don't see a need to ever push much higher resolutions than the 2k-4k/eye) would be much cheaper (this is also a weak point because everything will be cheaper in 5-7y...), and with the medium being 'mainstream' content and content creation would be much easier to come by in addition to their first party stuff.

I'm sure they're probably too invested at this point, but ultimately I don't want to see them Vita another product, especially in a medium I enjoy like VR. We all win with more players.
