Re: Nintendo Switch Announced, Scheduled to Release March 2017

GF is a lead at the Target distribution in this area and she said they will receive their shipment of the Switch next Wednesday and they only have 20 per store.

Will they be doing in store pre orders?

She said they are sending 1200 the first day then 2000 the next day. Says that normally means the first 1200 are pre-orders and the next order is for store stock. They service 80 stores

How can stores get away with this? I'd never preorder again at a store that canceled my preorder...

When you see multiple retailers cancel it's probably because projected allocated amounts changed since it was announced and preorders opened. This is probably on Nintendo, but yeah, those stores will take the brunt of the blame.

Yeah, I get it...just especially after reading all about the Gamestop Circle of Life on Kotaku recently would just annoy me more. They push preorders like crazy and then bail? Just crap. I agree that it's probably Nintendo, but still...don't promise crap you can't deliver.

This is what I was told by Target when I called to question them. Nintendo changed their allotted amount. I like my local Target so if preorders become available there, I have no issue in preordering another Switch there.

Best Buy is by far my number one store for video games. GameStop is actually second but the percentages are 90% Best Buy and 10% GameStop.

It sucks if your pre-order was cancelled but unless it's just that particular store, then it's all on Nintendo. Can't blame GameStop, Target, Amazon, etc. for taking pre-orders and then cancelling them due to Nintendo not being able to meet demand.

Like I have said, it's a rushed launch by Nintendo period. Such a shame too because you only get to launch your console one and if you screw it up, it can come back to bite you in the ***.

Nintendo should have the Switch at a 1-1 ratio with Zelda. At the very least, 2-1 but im betting it will be more like 5-1 with only the very first batch of pre-orders being completed.

I agree completely. I get Nintendo wanting to drive up demand with low stock, but given sales of the Wii U were so low Nintendo should be wanting to sell as many as possible on launch day. Last thing they want is for people to not be able to get one at launch and then change their minds about getting the system.

I do, though, think it's brilliant to release in March. The critics who have gotten to demo the system love it, and Zelda looks like it might be a pantheon entry in the series (which is saying something given how good the top games in that series are). By releasing in March, you'll have the system visible and out in the wild, with people playing on the bus, or the train, or on a park bench, and that will create good publicity itself. Couple that with the likely rave reviews for the new Zelda, and come Christmas time there might be a lot of people wanting the console. And Nintendo has those people covered with a brand new 3D Mario game (which would entice people on the fence). So I could actually see this console selling as well as the original Wii did. Of course, for that to happen, Nintendo would have to quit playing around with the stupid low stock tactics and actually let interested people buy the damn thing.

                          It sure does.
I'm thinking of getting it for my son's Wii U - which I just adopted as he doesn't play it anymore, haha.
I wonder how 'downgraded' it'll look on the U compared to the Switch.

I'm warming to the Switch. If it had a deep baseball game (even with cartoon graphics), I'd probably buy it.

I was starting to come around to pre-ordering one if I somehow landed on a pre-order without trying.

But if they are canceling pre-orders then what's the point?

I read this morning with Nintendo ceasing production of the Wii U that they're pumping out more Switch's than they initially planned. I look for preorders to pop up again soon from a couple retailers. I believe Walmart had them up earlier.

I think a September launch would have been better mainly for two reasons -

                                1. No shortages whatsoever (or at least ideally)
                                2. Better launch lineup and more time to finish/polish games with the extra six months

Looking at Switch, it's the same as Wii U. You get one awesome game here and there and then have these huge gaps. Splatoon 2 isn't a system seller. Mario Kart and the other updated ports won't do much to sell the console either. Zelda is but the main game has and always will be Mario. Regardless of Mario coming out this Fall or not, it would have been better for Switch to be released in September. You go from one of the worst (it is) launch lineups in console history to perhaps one of the best in console history.

Think about it - early September, you get Switch, Zelda and a few other games where as right now, let's be honest, is there anyone buying a Switch and NOT buying Zelda? Aside from those who just want to flip it?

Late October/early November, Mario launches. If it gets delayed to March 2018, you still have a crapload of games to play from the September launch to carry you until Mario. If Mario gets delayed to 2018, you're talking a year without a top tier new AAA game for Switch. Launch late September with a far better launch in what is usually a slow month before the onslaught of games in October and November for the other consoles not only gives everyone who buys a Switch several games to play (as opposed to one this March) and makes the six month wait more accepting and forgiving.

I had two chances to pre-order a Switch and passed both times. Mainly because I would only be buying the console for Zelda (until Mario) and won't even be playing it until the summer because I have six games between February 14th and April 11th that I want to play a lot more than Zelda so why buy a console for one game that im not even going to play for at least a few months? Also, I cancelled the Switch Pro controller pre-order that I had at Best Buy. No point in spending $76 on that when I won't even have the console.

There's a bunch of things that I don't like about the Switch and Nintendo rushing it to market because it clearly is because outside of Zelda, majority of the games aren't ready so why rush it? I do love the general idea and concept despite not having any interest in handheld gaming.

Add in the horrible idea behind their online offerings and thus far, a non-existent Virtual Console (which is still a given eventually) and it's just not enough for me to jump in. I can also easily see Nintendo releasing a Switch Mario bundle for $300 whenever the game releases so I figured, why take away a pre-order from someone that actually wants the console and will play it on March 3rd where as for me, it's going to sit in the box.

You get only one chance to launch a console and I would much rather have seen Nintendo take their time, get everything in order, organized and dated, use E3 to blow everyone else away and arguably most importantly, have plenty of consoles available for pre-order AND on release day in store.

Nintendo has a horrible history of holding back consoles to create a bigger demand than what there actually is. Only problem is that eventually consumers catch on, get pissed off and spend their money elsewhere.

With all of that said, im hoping that everyone here that wants a Switch is able to get one on March 3rd and that you all enjoy the console and of course, Zelda which should be a given.
