It's hard though...especially when I got my neighbor playing their franchise across the street...maybe I will occupy myself with Glamore Magazine.

I said I bought it, never said I opened it to play. Yeah, I'm that guy. I'll let you know in a couple years.

Been having the same thing happening since about the same time. The console is blinking orange, won't do anything. Have to unplug. Maybe they're trying to annoy us into buying a PS5 (even though they're still not readily available, which is amazing).

I make this post with the full disclosure of being a caveman (no offense to actual cavemen):
I have this spanking new PS5 with this glorious modern fully capable tv. Playing The Show 22, the framerate was just uncomfortable to watch knowing I had a new console that should be playing this game more impressively than the previous generation console.

I got to snooping around and came across a video that reminded to play the game on 120hz. I went through the tutorial to ensure the game was playing on 120hz which truly made the framerate improve drastically, but the game isn't as pretty to look at.

So if I have the newest, shiniest console, why can't I get framerate and beauty? Why is there a tradeoff? Again, please take into account I am working with a 78 IQ when it comes to these nuances.

Because the PS5 is cheaper than just a 3080. It’s more complicated than that but a console isn’t going to give you the best of the best.

The hardware just isn’t there yet. The PS5 is basically equivalent to some of the better graphics cards that came out in 2018.

I think the confusion around this topic has many culprits. There was the way it was marketed, for sure, but also the way games media and influencer types set expectations when hyping up the newer consoles earlier on.

That kind of set the tone for the ps5 being some kind no doubt 4K 60fps+ machine. Not to mention all the people that must be projecting the specs from their fancy new 4k TVs onto their compatible PS5s.

Games with lower overall graphics quality will often translate well to 120fps, but other than those few titles that can pull off 120 nicely, your expectations should be 30fps @4k, or 60fps at somewhat lower resolutions and some other graphical trade offs too.

I don’t mean any of this to be down on the console. I love my PS5, but my expectations for most games has always been a solid 60fps package.

I appreciate not being roasted by my bellyaching. The unfortunate irony I guess is the long drawn out effort to get a PS5, dropping $500, and not getting a next generation expected experience. First world, entitled, privileged, spoiled opinion on my part.

Of course I am enjoying my time with the machine and will just settle into focusing on that.

                    Does your TV support VRR?

If so, make sure you’re rolling with that. Seems like there are a good number of games out their that maintain the visual quality of the typical 60fps performance modes, but with unlocked frame rates.

Personally, I notice a meaningful jump in overall smoothness when I get to that 80-90fps range, especially with AAA single player games.

Getting a more capable TV is the one thing I do want to do. My older mid tier 4k TV is "good enough " and gets the job done. But, I already know I will see a huge difference if I upgraded. I usually find myself turning off HDR because it's too dim compared to standard. It's more of a timing thing for me. Wanted to jump on the July sales, but will wait. My toddler starts school in 3 weeks, so I'll have more than the 1-3 hours a week to at games and watch movies. Already have an idea of which tv, so will see if there are deals around Black Friday

Sadly, no, or at least when I try to enable it says its incompatible. It was a quite expensive Samsung Q series tv when I bought it in 2018.

Yeah, the feature didn’t really start becoming more widely adopted until after the new console releases. Maybe even didn’t start showing up until HDMI 2.1 came around… Not 100% on that, but I think you’d need the extra bandwidth for anything over 60fps @4K.

With the PSVR 2 news I wonder if that means we are going to get a big show case in a few days there are so many things sony is hiding and I hate how this gen has been drop feeding of info.

This is correct. Along with a TV that can handle it, you also need a proper HDMI 2.1 cable to accurately play 120Hz - such as this one: [https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=42682]
