I think there's only one optical port in the back of the reciever. Is that going to be a problem given the fact that the X-Box has one and the DVD has one? Do I need one of those dual optical boxes you were talking about? Thanks again for the help.
I would look for a TV with more than 2 component hookups. You can hook up the DIsh with a coaxial or other type of connection but it won't look good, plus you need the component connection for HD. If that TV has a DVI plug in the back of it , you could use that for your Dish Network (As long as the dish network receiver has a DVI too). DVI is better than Component.

Yes, you would need a coaxial to go from the DVD to the surround receiver, also one to go from your HD Pack on the xbox to the surround sound receiver (if you don't already have one).

If your receiver only has 1 optical jack, you can buy a splitter like in the picture below. The only catch is you would need a total of 3 optical cables. 1 cable goes from your receiver to the splitter, then you can plug the 2 cables (xbox and dvd player) into the other end of the splitter.

Re: Another HDTV questions info thread

since my latest tv crashed out on me. im looking for a new 32 inch. approx tv.

my service, comcast, only has like 3 channels in pure HDTV.. Is it even worth it to get a HDTV or just a normal flatscreen Wega by Sony....

Do channels that are not pure HDTV show up just as good? Like sometimes CBS says that the shows are in HDTV, but youre on the normal cable channel. How does that work?

it just means the show is available in HD, if you don't have it , the picture will look normal like all the other channels.

Picture tube TV's are the best. I know Sony has some HD Wegas. Not sure if Comcast would be worth it to you, but you can spend $50 on a regular antenna and pick up all your locals in HD.

Heelfan, do you know if Dish can use HDMI? DO you know what HDMI is? The Toshiba I'm looking at only has the 2 component hookups, but it also has an HDMI hookup. I've seen Monster HDMI cables at Sears, and I've heard that HDMI can be used by satellite boxes for a better picture. If that's the case, I should be able to get by with just two component connections, one for X-Box and one for the DVD player. Does that sound right?

Casey, I am not sure if the Dish Network Receivers have a HDMI jack on them. They do have a DVI though, that TV you want may have a DVI too. Dish has a special too (not sure how good the TV is) for $800. You get your choice of 2 TV's, and all the equipment all installed.

Yeah, I was looking for something a little larger than 40". The Toshiba I'm looking at doesn't have DVI. It just has that HDMI. I'll give Dish a call and see if their HD box has it. Can you pick up those optical splitters at regular stores, or do you have to get them online?

The Dish boxes (at least the ones that you get free with package setup) don't have HDMI, only DVI. Someone at Sears said that you can get a DVI to HDMI convertor that goes on the end of a DVI cable. Anyone ever use these before?

Radio Shack is the only place I can think of that might carry them.
