Re: Another HDTV questions info thread

I'm looking for my first HDTV and would appreciate some suggestions. I'd like to get a smaller TV, maybe 30-34" range that I can use in the living room for now until I can afford a larger one, at which point I'll move it to the bedroom.

I am completely overwhelmed with all the info on HDTV's, anybody have some suggestions on where to start or any models you've had good experiences with.

I'm not sure what your budget is, but this is CNet's reference HDTV. It's a tube so it's not as flashy as your lcd, but the picture quality is tops among all technology. It's the set I'll be buying when the finances permit.

Way out of my budget. I was hoping to spend less than $1000. Here are some that I've been looking at:

        Samsung 30"
        Philips 30"

I'd prefer it to be widescreen but I'm not sure if that makes sense at this small of a size. Also, what's the difference between HDTV and HDTV Monitor? I can get an HD box through Comcast so is it fine to get a Monitor since they seem to be somewhat less expensive?

Unless you're attached to getting a CRT, I'd look at a DLP for that price. Can probably get one between 40"-50" plus a stand for $2200. LCD's are great too, but I didn't really like the black levels the more I looked at them.

That's just my opinion though (and I'm sure others will feel a CRT is better or an LCD). I guess I'm just a big fan of DLP's after I got one and really got to appreciate the picture quality they possess.

Ahh, my TV! I've owned that set for about 4 months. Best set I've ever seen, compared it to LCD's, DLP's and Plasma's and still prefer my set. But like Jooboo said, it's my opinion. I have friends that swear by LCD and what not. Basically, you're going to get what you think looks good. Any HDTV will look good in reality, but some look better than others, and that's for your eyese to decide.

If you are spending under a grand, and looking at 30", go with Samsung. They make the best "cheap" HDTV's on the market IMO. They also make the best DLP sets.

Get a Widescreen set, whatever you do. All HD content is in Widescreen by default, so it is pointless to get a 4:3 TV. If you are going to be spending that kind of money, you shouldn't have to watch everything letterboxed.

Re: Another HDTV questions info thread

I got a 44" Toshiba DLP about 2 months ago now and I absolutely LOVE it!! The viewing angle is almost a full 180 degrees and the brightness and color it shows is amazing. And only being 14" deep and weighing under 70 lbs is also a plus.

Sure, DLPs are a projection TV, so you'll have to buy a new lamp every 3-4 years or so, but an LCD is just like an LCD screen on your computer (or PSP). Dead pixels can't be fixed, the whole thing does. Plasmas work off the gases in the screen and they degrade over time. No one knows how long that is, but when they go, you have to buy a whole new TV as well.

DLP, I feel, is the way to go. I haven't been disappointed.

After doing a bunch of research it seems the consensus is to go for the 30" Sony. LINK

Anybody have any experience with this TV?

Very good set, I would personally go with the Samsung for $200 cheaper, but that's your call. The Sony is top notch though. Shame they doin't make a XBR 30" anymore.

I see the 32" Samsung on CC's site but it's not widescreen. Do they make a widescreen version as well?

It's actually $100 cheaper. It's 899 on their site. Any tube HDTV will have geometry problems, even my XBR does. That's just something you have to live with if you don't go LCD. It's not bad or noticable though.

not an HDTV question, but does anyone here know what I should search for to find some sort of cable organizer stuff? I figure best buy or somewhere has to have it, just going to get a kitten relatively soon and need to protect my electronic cables to some extent (kittens love to chew)

For real? I figured they would have worked that out with the XBR? I have a Toshiba tube that's not HD and the sides are pretty bad when I'm playing video games, but I was hoping that wouldn't exist when I upgrade. So barely noticeable...that I could live with. Is it when you're watching regular television, movies, or games?

Is this inherent with the technology or something they can eliminate all together in the next line of XBRs?
