Re: HDTV Questions and Answers Thread

I have finished the basic calibration my KDS-55A2000 using AVIA, I still have a lot to learn about the test patterns, but here are my settings after basic settings adjustments (nearly completely dark room):

    Picture menu:

    Mode: Custom
    Advanced iris: Min
    Picture: 80
    Brightness: 44
    Color: 44
    Hue: 0
    Color temp: Warm2
    Sharpness: 50
    Noise reduction: Off

    --Advanced Settings--

    Black corrector: Off
    Gamma: Off
    Clear white: Off
    Live color: Off
    White balance: (see below)
    Detail enhancer: Off
    Edge enhancer: Off

    --White balance--

    R-gain: -2
    G-gain: -1
    B-gain: 0
    R-bias: -3
    G-bias: -2
    B-bias: -1

    Setup menu:

    Color matrix: Standard
    Power saving: On

My settings changed quite a bit after using the Avia DVD. I really had to adjust picture (72 changed to 80), brightness (56 changed to 44), and color (41 changed to 44). I did the calibration during the afternoon and then again at night. I had to changes based on my lighting during day and night. My daytime picture will be 82, brightness 46, and color will stay at 44. Everything else appeared the same. Again, this is just after calibrating using the basic test patterns on the Avia disc using the XBOX 360 DVD player. I am going to go through the same process using my regular progressive scan DVD player tommorrow. The PQ of the SXRD is great and the disc has only improved it thus far.

Well I finally bought an HDtv...JVC 56" HD-ILA 1080P HD56FH97. I love it so far, I have been browsing HD channels without a box since I will have to get the box tomorrow. Everything looks great and the 360 has renewed life now

This TV is phenomenal, I'm surprised noone else has this TV.

Why do you need to get a box if you are already getting the HD channels? The picture will be the same.

Some of the channels aren't coming in (ESPN2 and HBO). Plus its a pain to switch between the digital tuner and the regular analog channels.

I had a couple HD channels not coming in to start with as well, but I found them manually and had zero problems since. Make sure that your cable company actually offers those channels in HD too. I didn't realize you had to switch between digital and analog, I do not have to on mine. I was just trying to save you some cash, in my case about 50 bucks a month.

50 bucks? Wow...what service do you have? I have Comcast and it should be about 8 dollars for the HD package since the boxes will be switched out.

I do not have any kind of box at all. Mine goes straight from the wall to the TV. The HD channels are only 12 or 13 bucks, but to upgrade to the "digital" cable package it's 30 bucks or so. They give you a box and add a few channels to the lineup and give you a on screen program guide and call it an upgrade. It's clearly not worth it to me. I get every channel I really need already except for NFL Network, but they don't offer that anyway.

I pay about 22 bucks a month for basic cable which includes over 80 analog channels. As far as HD, I get ESPN HD, ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, Universal HD, TNT HD, Discovery HD Theatre, HD Net, HD Net Movies, and Outdoor Channel 2 HD. Those are the only HD channels that my cable company offers and I get them all with basic cable. I also get about 30 music channels that I never listen to. The only advantage getting a box would be is that I could record the digital channels, which I can not do now. If there is a way to do it, I haven't figured it out yet.

That makes sense...thats a pretty good deal. The thing I like about the box is the ability to have a guide so I can see whats coming on in 3 hours or whatever. Also, I need a box so I don't have to switch between my digital tuner on the tv and analog channels. Maybe it's a knock against the tv, I really don't know. I also might not be doing it correctly as far as searching for the channels. I went through them all one day and I could not find the ones I mentioned above. For some reason it won't find the analog channels either, just the digital ones.

your best bet would be a rear projection CRT or a tube TV. LCDs are not optimal for gaming.

Why arent LCDS good for gaming? Considering thats what all the kiosks use and everyone has a LCD on their computer, do LCD TV's have a slower refresh rate or something?

Im considering getting a Plasma but am afraid of burn in, I am also looking at LCD's and DLP but I heard DLP displays things slower then the action on the screen. (ex; pitching meter in MVP is not in sync)

LCDs: make sure the refresh rate is 8 ms or less, and for the most part, stick with Sony, Sharp, or Samsung (on a budget: Olevia, Westinghouse).

DLP: some brands have trouble with the problem you mentioned, some dont. If theirs a certain one you like, post around and see if people that own it have that problem.

Olevia's are pretty well calibrated out of the box (they actually care about the 6500K grayscale) so if the refresh rate is right, I'd definately go that direction if you don't want to go for the big names.

The only other company that calibrates out-of-the-box is Runco, and their gear comes at a hell of a premium pricepoint.
