Re: HDTV Questions and Answers Thread

    Hey all-

I am just a broke college student wanting to buy an HD-TV using the Christmas money I received from my parents and grandparents. I don't plan on buying ANOTHER t.v. until I graduate from graduate-school in the next 2 years, but I want a BIG t.v.!
I think I know what I am going to buy in about a week, but I wanted to opinions of my fellow OS'ers....I trust you guys.
Here is the t.v. (and I remember, it isn't the very BEST, but I am really strapped for cash and just want something big to play my Playstation 3 on that looks really good)

    *50" Phillips DLP HD-TV Rear-Projection Television

    *1280 x 720p Resolution

    *16:9 aspect ratio widescreen

I am sooo close to buying it in the next few days, because I really like it, but I was just wondering what you guys think. My brother has been telling me to get a t.v. with 1080 quality instead of this 720p, but I was wondering if it makes that much of a difference (especially since I don't want to spend much money)

All comments would be VERY appreciated! Thanks all!!!!

Phillips is more known for their LCD TV's than their DLP. Gotta questions for ya:

      1. What's your budget?
      2. What's the size of the room where the TV will be?

        Yep. Those are key questions.

Do you have a tv stand to fit a 50inch DLP ? If not, gotta figure that into the budget as well....

I'm assuming you've watched the tv in question and don't see the "rainbow effect" ? Some do, some don't.

So my parents have a 2-3 year old Samsung rear projection DLP and every few hours, it is just turning off. I checked all the menus and every type of timer in the menus are all turned off.

Any ideas why it would just turn off? Is the bulb running out? I haven't seen anything visually to indicate a problem with a bulb.

            1. I don't really want to spend anything over $1000...I'm in grad-school.

            2. I am in a good size bedroom, so I really don't need a 50", but am planning on moving next year and using it in my living room.

            3. There is a t.v. stand that comes along with it, so that's covered.

            4. I haven't seen the rainbow effect, but I haven't looked closely enough I guess. (Is it real common in DLP's??)

If you wanna stay under $1,000 your better off getting yourself an LCD. It's gonna be hard to find a 50' 720p DLP HDTV for under $1,000.

I've heard DLP has gotten better with Rainbow Effect, but it's still not totally eliminated..

Kinda funny - I noticed the Rainbow effect when I first got my DLP TV but dont notice it anymore. Guess I got used to it.

Same exact thing happened to me. I never saw it in the store either. Now, I can't even force myself to see rainbows.

Can someone explain to me the "rainbow effect" I am to be looking for?? I don't want to buy something that isn't going to make me happy; furthermore, I don't want to take it home and be second-guessing myself.

"The Rainbow Effect is an artifact unique to single-chip DLP projectors. The artifact appears as a rainbow or multi-color shimmer briefly noticeable when changing focus from one part of the screen to another. It appears as a secondary image that appears at the viewer's peripheral vision and is generally noticeable when shifting focus from a high contrast area or bright object. For a quick video example of the effect, click here (warning: 5MB video).
Higher color wheel speeds, LED lamp systems, 7+ segment color wheels, and archimedes color wheel designs (pending for years now) are designed to minimize or altogether eliminate the effect. 3-chip DLP systems do not have any RBE because they do not require a color wheel. DLP, however, seems to think that DLP chips are worth more than gold and so, for now, 3-chip DLP projectors cost about 10x the price of entry level 3LCD projectors. Perhaps someday soon they will loosen their grip on the market and the color wheel can finally die the quick but painful death it deserves."

Basically, you'll see splashes of red/green/blue in the middle of the TV due to the color wheel. I saw it mostly on dark scenes that had some bright spots.

I never saw it in a store, but I did once I got my DLP home. It lasted about a month and now I don't see it anymore. One thing that might have caused it to happen more were the default settings my TV had. The brightness was set way too high. I also think I just got used to it.

                          Thanks for the explanation guys!

...so, when I get my DLP home I should DEF not use the default settings...where could I find out what settings are best and what I should change them to? (assuming I buy the t.v.)

Like I said earlier, you probably won't even notice the rainbow effect. Just something to be aware of.

In terms of tv settings, most of them have the brightness/contrast way too high. I'd start there.

In terms of actual settings, I'd try ww.avsforum.com Lots of people list their tv setting preferences. The key things is that it's "their" preference which will take into account different variables: lighting, placement, viewing distance, etc.

I'd just use those a baseline and then tweak for you own taste.
                            Good luck and Merry Christmas.

I am trying to hook up my PS3 to a new HDTV I just got. I have the regular red/yellow/white av cable that came with my PS3 but do I need the four plug one? Also do I need a HDMI cable?
