Re: Another HDTV questions info thread

Alright guys, since you've guided me perfectly to the XBR960 in my first purchase, I come to you all again as we approach the holidays...where my sister and I will be getting the folks a nice flat panel for the living room. I'm reading up on LCD vs. Plasma so I can get a head start before we pull the trigger. Since burn out is not as big a problem as I thought and color fading and TV life is estimated to be pretty comparable to tubes, I'm now beginning to give plasmas some serious consideration.

Any suggestions on an amazing, can't miss television if I want to spend around $3,000 for a 37-42 incher? Important to note: working for the cable company, I get a great discount on Panasonic and Phillips (the ambilight models included), as well as a discount on a TV & extended warranty at Circuit City until mid November (and that's on all brands). So if there's a TV for $5,000 that's too good to pass on, let me know as I may be able to get it cheaper.

One quick question based on some preliminary browsing. I'm noticing that a lot of the good LCDs have a picture resolution of 1366 x 768 whereas plasmas are at 1024 x 768. Why is that, and which is better? I would think it'd be the opposite since plasmas are so highly regarded for home theater use.

I've always heard to watch it in the native resolution of your TV. My TV's native res is 720p. However, I flipped around from 720p to 1080i on my cable box and I swore the 1080i looked a little better. I guess it also depends on what it's being broadcast as. I can't recall what each station broadcasts as though...

I think 480p is regular analog cable. So you'll need that to view analog cable. I know there's a setting for that in my STB/DVR.

If something like ESPN supports 720p (and not 1080i), and your HDTV only supports 1080i, will it still receive a Hi Def signal?

Does anybody think I'll be able to pick up a good HDTV for 500-600 like after Christmas, early Spring?

Something to fit in a bedroom or small living room. Like 20-30".

I'm wondering about this TV set at the moment. It is in the Circuit City ad this week, so it should be marked down a little bit.

                  Samsung 30" Wide SlimFit HDTV

There's a Philips 30" I'm curious about as well, but its a HDTV Monitor. What exactly does that mean? Is it HD ready or what?

Okay, I have a question about component cables.

Would these be the two proper sets that I would use for PS2 and Xbox?

                    Xbox: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...70543?v=glance

                    Thanks.

Great TV...I have the 55" version of that exact TV. I've seen it on sale for $2999 so make sure you get it for that price wherever you buy it.

Can somebody answer this question for me. If I were to purchase an HDTV monitor, would I have to purchase a HD reciever to play Xbox or DVDs in Hi-Def?

I know I've been hanging around here, looking for a TV, but I want don't want to make a bad decision, since I want this set to last me for 3-5 years at least.

Okay. Currently I have an old-*** 20" Sanyo, which doesn't even have A/V slots, lol. This is what I'm looking for in a television set (I haven't really described exactly what I'm looking for before now). I can either set it up in my room or put a set up down in the basement. Either way I probably cannot go larger than a 30". Space is limited somewhat, since it is a bedroom, so the smaller/lighter the better. Since I'm a college student, the price is also a factor, but with 0% financing deals, it isn't that big of a factor. I would love to get a HD-TV and/or a widescreen.

What I want to get use the TV for is to play Xbox 360, DVD player, and possibly a personal "home theatre" system (if I can set it up in the basement). That's pretty much it. I don't use my television to watch programming much, other than the occassional Fox football game or sometimes I tune into a local station for news. But that's pretty much it.

If anybody can help me out, I would greatly appreciate it. Like I said, I've been browsing through the thread since early Summer and am still looking and I will probably still be looking (unless I'm suggested something great) until I get the Xbox 360, which will most likely be Spring 06. Anyway, thanks in advance for anyone who's willing to help.
