It's really a matter of personal preference, but you will likely find more people who say that 720p is better for sports and other programming which has a lot of fast motion. Personally, I think the difference is negligible, but I guess it depends on a lot on what set of eyes is viewing.

I have 2 HDTV sets in my house: a 65 inch Mitsubishi rear projection CRT, and a 50 inch Samsung DLP in my bedroom. The Mitsubishi's native resolution is 1080i, while the Sammy's is 720p. I have viewed several sporting events on both, and they both look great. You also have to take the resolution the stations are transmitting at into account. I know with NFL games, Fox broadcasts at 720p while CBS uses 1080i. So, basically, if you buy a 720p native TV, anything you watch that is natively transmitted in 1080i is going to have to be scaled down to 720p by either your source (cable or satellite box) or the TV itself. Same goes for 1080i sets, with 720p material being upconverted to 1080i.

The scaling process can effect the picture quality, though it's usually not a big deal. Furthermore, DirecTV uses heavy compression on their HD material to fit it onto their cramped bandwidth, so there is more picture degradation than there should be. Cable can be effected by the quality of their lines, but the picture is generally less compressed.

I think you can only get Fox Sports Net in HD with cable, and I would guess that they use 720p, since all other Fox stations do.

Dollar for dollar, CRT's are by far the best bang for your buck. They are a dying technology, so the demand is low and the deals are plenty. If you don't mind the bulkiness (especially for the bigger sizes), that is probably what you should do.

Thanks for all of the information. So, if I were to buy a CRT, I could still watch FSN HD with it upconverting to 1080i (even though it will be a little worse, or whatever)?

      Cool, thanks.

Sigh.. It won't look any worse.. & it seems more stations broadcast in 1080i instead of 720p..

I'm not saying that it would necessarily look worse because I was running it in 1080i instead of 720p, but since FSN HD is 720p native (or so I'm told), then wouldn't converting or scaling it to another type of HD thing the channel doesn't support take anything away?

Also, the only channels that I'm really going to be watching in HD are FSN and ESPN. Not really anything else.

Yes, your CRT would have to upconvert the signal to 1080i, but like others are saying, it's a really negligible difference if any at all. There is no way to get around the scaling, either, since you have stations transmitting at both 720p and 1080i. The compression DirecTV does with their HD content, for example, degrades the picture far more than the scaling process is going to. I wouldn't worry about it.

Re: HDTV Questions and Answer Thread

I've been shopping around for a second HDTV (I have a rear projection that is about 3 yrs old), and one thing that I've noticed is that at some stores you have to be very careful when looking at the pictures...reason being that they have some of the HDTV's hooked up to coaxial cable and some on component...a couple of the sets looked so bad compared to others that I started peeking around the back of them and then asked the sales guy about it...basically most (but not all) of the plasma/lcd's at my Best Buy were on component, but all the CRT HD's were on coaxial...I would think that makes it kind of tough to get a true read on which has the better picture.

Anyway, I have a space issue (namely this thing has to fit in a space in a built in that is 39.5 inches wide) and I so far have only really liked one set that would fit: Sony 42" Rear Projection LCD. The depth of the set is not an issue (it's going in the built in) but I really don't know much about what the differences would be between this set and a flat panel LCD or Plasma....other than a pretty big difference in price. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks!

I have the Sony 42 model..Great for gaming & being used as a monitor..BUT if you plan on watching a lot of DVDS I'd go with the plasma..It's more CRT like..

It would be too hard to switch the wires wenever i wana play xbox or 360(takes too much effort to get into the back of my tv whenever i wana switch). What can i do? any kind of splitters available?

ALso I have a RCA 52' HDTV. I have a Tivo and a Satellite and a 5.1 home theater system. right now my picture does not seem as clear as it should be. I have componet cables and a s vdeo cable connected as well as my 360 connected too. I have my dvd home theater system connected to the componet spot red, green and blue on my tv. I have my video 1 input connected to my tivo and my satellite connected to my tivo too. My satellite does not have any outputs except red white and yellow. Does anyone know which cables are the best and the correct way to hook them up for the best possible picture. I have been trying different things but I can not get it right. Thankyou in advance.

Guys, what do you think of the Vizio LCD HDTVs? They're a bit on the cheaper side compared to some of the other brands. At the Costco in my area, they've got a 37" HD built in LCD TV for only $1500. Seems too good to be true. I'm totally clueless when in comes to high definention TVs so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
