That's horrible, Spiderman 2 did like 50 million the first night on a Wednesday. Let's hope it picks up the pace this weekend.

It was also summer and, I think, it was also 4th of July week.

Plus the East Coast didn't have a massive winter storm.

Exactly. The best time to go the movies is during the day right before Christmas because the theatres are empty.

We've done that before... good times indeed. The guys would go out and check out a movie... although I think the last time we did that we checked out the first HP movie... I may try and get the whole family to come see Kong... cause last time everyone went to a movie it was Titanic and I stayed behind and played the Madden on N64 without a NFL license... how far we've come.

Actually a friend of mine went to see it on Wednesday night in Toronto where a storm didn't hit until 24 hours later and said the theater was half full. He thought the 1st hour was dull and the ending was way too drawn out and some people even walked out before the ending probably figuring 3 hours was long enough to sit there since the ending wasn't exactly a mystery. That's enough for me to wait for it on DVD.

If this movie bombs commercially, relatively speaking, which is looking likely, watch how all these glowing reviews by critics will change in a few months time to save face. I remember all the initial glowing reviews with the last 3 Star Wars movies and how they were panned a year later at least for the first 2 and I'm sure the same thing will happen with the 3rd in time. Critics get influenced by the hype like moviegoers and jump on the bandwagon.

                Re: King Kong

Saw it last night. Pretty empty theatre in Owings Mills, MD. But it was really crap weather, so that *might* have had something to do with it. Regardless, I thought the movie was worth the 9 bucks to see it on the big screen. It dragged a little during the first hour, but seeing Naomi Watts more than made up for it

As expected, the special effects were jaw dropping (although not revolutionary), and the story line was very heartfelt and you even got to feel for the lesser characters as well.

A couple things I did have problems with, and without spoiling the movie...

                1. The ice skating scene was pointless, and although it was meant to show the bond that Kong and Ann have developed, it was ... umm.. strange?
                2. The entire island scene after Ann gets taken by Kong until we get back to NYC. Amazing special effects, but I found the entire action sequence of the 2nd hour of the movie to be completely phony. Convenient placement of vines, Jack kicking the dinosaur in the head, why a TRex would even care about a tiny creature like Ann. I actually found this portion of the movie to be its weakest.
                3. At the very end, at the top of the Empire State Building... come on... she'd be blown off due to winds (I know that's totally nitpicking, but at least have a sense of realism in an otherwise unrealistic movie).
                4. How'd they get Kong on the boat?

I hope I gave nothing away with those minor pet peeves (I hope most, if not all, of you at least know the general outline of the Kong movies). All in all, 2.5 out of 4. If you want to see the movie, it's gotta be seen on the big screen, otherwise save your money.

I personally found the ice skating scene to be one of the strongest parts of the film. Showed that Kong was actually a gentle beast who was playful and kid like. I don't know why, it just moved me with that scene.

                    I dont get it.

I read somewhere that movies in general are down huge this paty year.

IMO what happened to the music industry is happening to movies, alot of piracy bringing down the numbers.

I think increasing movie prices, and the sale of DVD's is hurting a lot of movies these days too. Hell, for the price of two tickets ($8-10 each), you can just wait for the DVD and go buy the damn thing and watch it as much as you want (especially when places like Best Buy sell new releases for around 14.99 the day they come out)...

I think this thing will be fine, just give it a few weeks, I'm guessing 70 million total this week? Whatever the case is, it will make back the 207 million dollar price tag in domestic and overseas box office. It is weird though the lack of interest so far.

It's a remake. Personally, I just get tired of remakes myself whether they are pretty hot or not. Movies just don't cut the cake anymore lately for some strange reason.......

I'd say it's pretty hard to come up with something original nowadays. Even with T.V. shows, books, songs, and sports. I have a feeling that very soon material is going to be worn out in a sense that nothing will be featured as something "new"... as it almost is now.

Maybe this movie just isn't very good and people have no interest watching a big ape have a hard on for woman the size of his pinkie finger and they're not gonna take thier kids to a 3 hour movie. I think alot of critics and Jackson fans are watching this with rose colored glasses on because of LOTR. I've heard there is alot of unintentional laughter in theaters especially with that ice rink scene. I don't know anybody who has a desire to see this movie as they think it's a kids movie.

From the trailers I've seen the CGI of the fighting scenes and Kong in NY look like a video game and Kong fighting Trex's like Bruce Lee. That turned me and probably alot of movie goers from seeing it. The story is too silly for the average movie going adult and too boring for kids. It can't find an audience. The ending of this movie is so well known that sitting though a slow first hour and waiting for an ending that totally lacks any suspense doesn't sound appealing. PJ should have taken more liberties with the story and at least changed the setting of the ending.

Extenuating circumstances didn't seem to affect the last Harry Potter movie so if Kong makes less than 50 Mil on the weekend it will be considered a major bomb and I seriously doubt that it will have any staying power. I'm sure Universal won't be handing him any more limitless budgets to satisfy his childhood fantasies.
