I'm guessing Paulie attacking that guy was a rogue move. It seemed that after his mother begged Tony not to hurt her boy, and Paulie was jealous of the relationship he has with her.
This was a slightly boring episode, or maybe just laying the ground work for the rest of the season. Janice, Mrs. New Age herself, sure did seem quick to change the subject when Tony told her he would view each day as a gift. Bobby is plainly whipped, and tonight showed how he's trying to branch away for his own personal gain like Chrissy (and "buying" Tony off with the 7k).

Does anybody know what the song was playing during the credits from last night? It had something using backmasking. It could be Frank Zappa for all I know (who purposely used backmasking on one of his 60s records).
A great episode last night. Paulie needs to be watched, and kept on a short leash. Frank Vincent is the man as Phil Leotardo, but I think it's only a matter of time before Tony starts pushing back. I can't wait until next week--the big wedding! (small spoiler)
*EDIT* JohnnyTheSkin, I read your post about Janice and Bobby. Bobby got that 7K, because Tony told him in the hospital that despite being a nice guy, every man will be judged on his own merit. Vito might've been making some phone calls to his cousin, Phil Leotardo or polishing somebody's knob or having health complications of some sort or a combination of those. You never know. lol. At least Carm clued Tony in on his suspicious ways.

I looked for a comparative narrative in which these points exist. I found one.
"The Devil and Daniel Webster" by Stephen Vincent Benet.
I looked at the 1941 film version as well as the original short story. (Film from the Criterion Collection, Janus Films and RKO Pictures; short story was first published in 1937.)
Brief synopsis:
Jabez Stone sells his Soul to the Devil for seven years of all that money can buy. He renegotiates for 3 more years. When his time is near, Jabez Stone seeks out the great Daniel Webster to help him fight for his soul.
Corresponding points, culled from both the film and short story of "The Devil and Daniel Webster."
1. Walter HUSTON plays the Devil.
2. LITTLE and BIG HARP are characters in the movie.
3. Points 2 + 3 combined.
4. Houston sounds just like "HUSTON."
5. The Devil tells Stone "my name is Scratch."
6. Daniel Webster is a lawyer.
7. The trial for Jabez' soul takes place in a barn.
8. The state that the story takes place in is New Hampshire.
9. Daniel, Webster's first name.
10. The devil brings a woman named "Belle" to the Stone home. Belle is a variant name for Isabella. Belle sings to baby Daniel Stone in a foreign language (French).
11. Jabez Stone sells his SOUL for SEVEN prosperous years.
12. Judge/Justice Hawthorne/Hathorne is a character in this narrative.
13. BENedict Arnold is also a character here. To me BILL the KID brother to Phil Leotardo means this: BILL/WILLIAM---KID/KIDD equals William Kidd AKA Captain Kidd, another character in the story. King Phillip is a character in the written short story.
14. The devil reveals gold in the floor of the Stone barn. The devil said it was left there by the HESSIANS after being ambushed, enroute to Saratoga.
15. Walter Huston.
16. STEPHEN Vincent Benet wrote both the stroy and screenplay for "The Devil and Daniel Webster."
17. Mother Stone's finger gets pricked accidentally when Jabez goes to hug her. The Devil pricks Jabez Stone's finger to seal the contract for his soul.
18. MARTIN VAN BUREN Aldrich. A boy who speaks to Daniel Webster when he comes to the town of Cross Corners, New Hampshire.
19. Quote- "If two New Hampshire men aren't a match for the devil, we better give the country back to the Indians."
20. Daniel Webster comes from Massachusetts to aid Jabez Stone.
21. "Stone" is the family name.
22. When Jabez Stone's 7 years are almost up, he re-negotiates with the devil for THREE MORE YEARS.
23. Pie. Mother Stone bakes a pie that the devil steals and eats.
24. Plucky- Daniel Webster to Jabez about his wife, Mary:
" They grow PLUCKY women in New England."
25. Bowling Balls- The devil in the bar. he says " Did you ever see such hail ? Big as BOWLING BALLS."
26. Jabez Stone's farmer neighbors are hard up, financially. but they won't deal with the LOANSHARKS.
27. A Sheriff is a character in the movie.
28. Daniel Webster calls young Daniel Stone "COLONEL."
29. One of Stone's neighbors is named ELI Higgins.
30. Daniel Webster is GODFATHER to young Daniel Stone.
31. From the short story. The devil tells Webster his future.
Partial quote: "...they will call you ICHABOD."
32. Ma Stone says New England is known for its weather and codfish. Partial quote "...That, and codfish." A grouper fish is sometimes classified as a form of codfish.
33. UZ/OZ/WAS- Ma Stone reads from the Book of Job. Job was from the "Land of Uz." Note: L Frank Baum published the original story of the "Wizard of Oz" in 1900. In 1901, a musical adaptation was discussed and Baum made a song lyric for it. Here he rhymed "Oz" with the word "WAS'. A legend but possibly "Uz" and "Oz" were pronounced the same way. If true then both exist in the narratives of "The Sopranos" and "The Devil and Daniel Webster."
34. Janice Soprano- Her son is named HARPo (later called "Hal")
I think that "The Sopranos" will be about the Devil trying to get the Soul of Meadow Soprano because at this point, he has just about every other character's Soul sewn up in his vest pocket. This will be an ongoing post as I continue to look for clues connecting the two stories.

Why meadow? why not AJ, the opening is there for AJ to join the club, but meadow? if anything the devil will be trying to get the soul of AJ. but alot off ppl feel meadow is heading down a path for something major to be happening this season and i dont know why.Comment

Tony has said in past seasons that he doesn't want to bring AJ into the life. Besides, what good would AJ do, anyway? He'll probably be in and out faster than Jackie Jr.
Meadow probably wouldn't join, unless some "Bella Mafia" stuff happens where Tony and the Jersey crew gets wiped out and she inherits the remains of both families. Which probably isn't going to happen.
