Exactly. I've read far too many complaints that Rage became fixated on politics in Battle of LA, and I have to say have you actually listened to their first two albums???

Rage Against The Machine - One of the best debut albums of the last 20 years.

That is amazing. Really, I had no clue they sold that well.

I knew about the new one, but when did Lateralus come out, 2002?

They have a rabid fan base that will buy anything, and they are obviously pretty big. But in the long run, 9 million albums sold, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Green Day all out-did that with a single album, RHCP weren't too far behind.

They are more popular than Radiohead though. And they are critically accepted. I can see them being talked about a while from now, but I still dont think they will be in the same light as some of the others.

I do take back my "niche" comment though, and I apologize.

I'm not saying they aren't influenced by grunge aswell though. Their first album was HEAVILY influenced by AIC and Soundgarden. Their second album though... It's acoustic and old-school with like 1-2 grunge-esque songs tossed in.
You obviously don't listen to very much "grunge."

That was from AMG's review for Us & Them.

Lateralus came out in 01... was certified Platinum a month after it debuted. Tool will undoubtedly take the #1 billboard spot for their debut week. I think Lateralus debuted selling 280k albums in it's first week or something like that. They have sold roughly 9 million copies of their 3 LP's and 1.5 million of their debut EP. I realize Nirvana and other bands will outsell and continue to outsell Tool til the end of time, but IMO that doesn't make them any less legendary. Tool isn't niche, but you were correct in your assessment that they aren't universal. They do tend to only capture certain people, but 10.5 million albums sold say they aren't 'niche'.

Actually I do listen to grunge, I grew up on that genre. AMG is incorrect though. Do you always believe what a review states? Rolling Stone called Franz Ferdinanad the saviours of rock in their last album review. Brent's voice will always be compared to Cornell because of the brute power and range he has. Brent sounds more like Otis Redding than Cornell though in his vocal stylings. Cornell also can't do acoustic anywhere near as well as Brent. Beyond The Sun isn't even their song, they covered it.

I understand, that's why I took back my comment. 10.5 is no small accomplishment. I remember Lateralus came out the same day as Weezer's 'comeback' album. And you're right, they have no real competition next week, they will be a shoe in for #1.

Anyway, not a niche band, but I still stand by them not being an absolute classic of the era. They are close though.

Rolling Stone is in their own little world.

When a review notices things I hear and pick up on, then yes I believe it. And believe me, its more than just one review referencing Alice in Chains and Soundgarden.

Of course it is... Listen to the voices singing. Brent has a lot of similarities to Layne and Cornell. But his voice is different, he has far more soul than either of those two could have ever imagined having themselves.

Take some time and watch the performances from Stripped Music.

Then you come back and tell me he isn't a better vocalist than anyone else in the rock game today.

I've heard him sing. Its not like I don't know what the hell these guys sound like. The radio is on for 8 hours where I work and mostly its on the "classic rock" station, so of course Shinedown is played at least once every one or two hours. They don't stick out, they blend in with all the other post-grunge bands.

He is BETTER live and unplugged than in studio. You can't really get the power of his vocals along with the soul through the radio. That performance is completely unplugged, including a cover of U2's 'One'.

Neither, Soundgarden pwns both of them.

This is a bit off topic but wouldn't it be funny if one of the American Idol people did a cover of a RATM song like Freedom or Take the Power Back? Then it'd be even funnier when they'd win in a landslide.

                              That'd be classic.

I'm a huge fan of Shinedown's new album, but I have to admit their influences stem alot from grunge. Yeah, there's southern influences too, but I think I hear grunge more than southern. Either way, they're one of few radio bands left that I really like, Brent Smith's voice is definitely one of the best among current vocalists...and the music behind him got alot better on their sophomore effort, imo.

As for the actual topic, I'd take Rage over Audioslave. I love Cornell, but he sounds nothing like he once did. He sounds alot better on OOE than he did on their first one, but it's still not near what he was in Soundgarden or even his solo album. And Rage is too constricted within Audioslave. I'm not a big fan of the rap-metal genre, but RATM was better than Audioslave.
