They're have been better "lyricists" than Nas, Rakim, and Jay. What made them top MC's though and what Pac does almost better than anybody is his flow, the relevance to what he is saying, and his ability to make you relate and feel what he is trying to convey. A whole lot of cats can throw out a bunch of slick metaphors, but they can't make it mean something like the why Pac did it.

Man, X was better than Pac IMO. Most people would say that all his albums before the "Great Depression" were absolute classics.Comment

"It's Dark..." was the only undisputed classic IMO, but I agree that X is better than Pac.Originally posted by Vinceanity2k3Man, X was better than Pac IMO. Most people would say that all his albums before the "Great Depression" were absolute classics.Comment

I don't know a single person who was listening to rap pre-1996 who thinks Pac is the best rapper ever. I really never dug any whole albums of his cept for the Makaveli joint.Originally posted by aholbert32This always cracks me up. I remember back in 95' before Pac's death, NOBODY was saying he was a top lyricist. He was definetly popular but no one would rate him over a Rakim or KRS back then. Its funny how dying makes you a better rapper.
Just ask all these people who think Pac is the best rapper ever to name all of his albums off the top of their heads. I'll bet $100 that they can't do it. All they got is his friggen Greatest Hits that dropped in '97 and a few post-humous albums."You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier

I love Mos Def but c'mon, he's got a classic solo album and a classic joint-album w. Kweli after a dozen years in the game. He need(ed - if he's sticking to acting from here on out) way more material to get Top 10 status.Originally posted by forensicdNo honorable mention for mos def? Re: mtvs top 10 greatest rappers ....
What was so relevant about Pac? What was he saying while he was alive that was so different than what others were saying? The 9 other rappers on this top ten list have just as many "uplifting" or "message" songs as Pac. The 9 other rappers made songs that people in the streets could relate to. Pac had a nice flow but so does Snoop and I know Snoop isnt a top 10 rapper. Its the combination.Originally posted by RockyThey're have been better "lyricists" than Nas, Rakim, and Jay. What makes KRS or Jay or Nas a top 10 rapper is the combination of a nice flow and lyrics. Pac is missing one of the key components.Comment

Great point. I dont know how you can be top 5 and not even have a classic album.Originally posted by ehhI don't know a single person who was listening to rap pre-1996 who thinks Pac is the best rapper ever. I really never dug any whole albums of his cept for the Makaveli joint.

Re: mtvs top 10 greatest rappers ....
So, true. If Pac was alive today he wouldn't rate himself higher than KRIS or Rakim. I think/know that KRIS is the greatest MC ever. I been listening to rap/hip hop since 1979. I remember hip hop before KRIS and after and few MCs can match his track record and none of those top 10 guys would want to battle KRIS.Originally posted by aholbert32This always cracks me up. Re: mtvs top 10 greatest rappers ....
eminem is another overrated guy, he had to great albums with slim shady and marshall mathers other then that he went back to meatloaf and apple piesOriginally posted by gohIt's obvious groups aren't included but to put Emeniem at #9,I still think that's terrible. I don't like Jay-Z either so I can't say I agree with him being #1.Comment

Both Don Kulamanati and All Eyez On Me got 5 mics in The Source(in a time where that still meant alot). Me Against The World is, IMO, his best album and also considered a classic as well.Originally posted by aholbert32Great point.
