I have to admit the post DOW stuff has been fairly good so far.

I was so mad. I went to the comic book shop and picked up weapon x #1 and life after Logan, but completely forgot to grab deadpool/cap.

They can't be THAT blatant and make this Sharp guy basically the basis for how they bring Wolverine back right? I mean, I guess they could justify it but meh....After all it's Logan that's dead and not the code name "Wolverine" per se. Still, seems kind of like a bait and switch in some respects.

I was thinking the same thing, im hoping they don't bring back the name. Let it be gone with Logan until he comes back. I'm interested to see how the rest of the 4 issues will pan out. It's a good read for a follow up along with Logan Legacy.

I don't think history will look back too kindly upon this era of comics.

When you say "this era" how far back are you going? I can tell you that at least with Batman this era will be looked back as one of almost X-Men level of glut but at the same time the core books have been very good. Year Zero was a bit of a misstep IMO but The Court of Owls event was quite strong. The integration of Damien as a central piece of the Batman story has been quite successful. On the other hand they went too far with the Joker as crazed force of evil what with the intimation that he's more evil incarnate than person. The Joker's daughter being shoved down our throats has been another issue that's irked some fans. Overall though, there's been more good than bad with Batman IMO.

However you may have a point about this era not being fondly remembered as the New 52 has been mixed at best. (though to me it has made Superman much more readable. I enjoyed the Doom storyline throughout the Superman family of books.) The GL books are being crushed under the weight of its own internal universe and storylines, The Justice League books have been mixed at best as well though at least the actual flagship title has some very interesting things going on right now so at least creatively it's worth reading.

Over at Marvel though, is where your statement makes the most sense. Bendis left the Avengers as a broken entity and instead of Marvel simplifying and returning to the core idea that made it work for decades, they've done the complete opposite with writers who are so self indulgent and into their specific style that the books have been impenetrable for new readers and i'm sure even some long time readers, there's been a rapid expansion of the property with all these Avengers books and none of them are really that good. (the best of them to me, was with the Unity team with the Mutants and other Avengers started off good but then it went sideways) Captain America has seen some weird status quo changes though I did like the whole Dimension Z thing and his son but now they've aged Steve Rogers and put the Falcon as Cap. So far it's.....interesting. I will need more time to fully analyze that. Spider-Man is now so far from the guiding principles that make that story run and we're back with this whole Spider Totem BS that was reviled when JMS was writing the book.

The only Marvel property that seems to be going gangbusters interestingly enough are the X-Books. X-Force is the weakest book to me but the others are eminently readable and the core books have been doing some interesting stuff. Bendis has been doing a great job with the displaced X-Men as well as the whole "Cyclops as militant and misguided leader" thing. The writing style on his books still irks me but it's not as bad as when he was doing Avengers.

The Big Events of this era have left a lot to be desired though and one wonders if maybe they've completely exhausted themselves creatively. Oh, they HAVE to do these super huge events twice a year because that's the model for the past 20ish years but at some point both Marvel and DC may have to think about a moratorium on their events. At least DC has done a better job lately making it very easy to follow an event without having to buy the side books and it seems to me they don't put out nearly as much "supplemental material" as Marvel does. Marvel, on the other hand has the core event book and seemingly hundreds of supplemental books. It's pretty incredible really.

3 or so years ago I was of the view that Marvel could do no wrong but they've succumbed to the excesses of success while DC to me, has been getting better then they were at that point but their journey to me has been one of 3 steps forward, 2 steps back. Both companies right now IMO are at a low ebb across the board creatively speaking. There are some bright spots but there are far more warts than anything else.

Excellent summary. I grew up with Bronze Age Marvel, so things just seem way too busy for me now. Crossovers, major events, reboots, renumbering, "deaths" of major characters, a glut of Avengers and X-Men books -- it's all way too much for me. Plus the tone is inconsistent. Who's the target audience? Kids? 40-year-old diehards? Newbies drawn from the movies?

The thing is, I think there's a tremendous amount of talent in the comics industry these days, and I've liked the concept of many of Marvel's big events, but the execution has often been poor (they always seem bloated and rushed at the same time), and there's just been too many of them. It's made a mess of continuity, which used to be Marvel's forte. I'd much rather they take a page from DC and fully flesh out some of their big events in self-contained What If/Elseworlds realities while streamlining the 616.
