    Re: Comic Book Fans....

Finally got through most of my comics from last week. I got a late start on reading them because of company over the weekend. Here's what I thought about a few of them (slight spoilers if you read these comics).

Action Comics #839 was good as usual. I really like the story and it is a nice warmup for the Superman Returns movie since it has a similar feel to it, especially in this issue. Looks like the artists have incorporated the movie's Superman emblem into Superman's costume as well. I'm not too happy about that because I really don't care for the textured emblem. I like the way this issue had Superman talking to himself about how he feels now that he has his powers back. He really seemed to enjoy his time without powers because it gave him a closer connection to Lois and the people he protects, but protecting the Earth is his purpose in life and there's no way he would give up his powers.

Superman/Batman #26 had gotten a lot of attention over the past few months because of the passing of Sam Loeb. His plot was fun and I really liked reading another story focusing on Robin and Superboy (Conner Kent). I loved any comic that had them together, and it was great having one last story. The 20-something artists/writers in this issue I thought would be distracting, but I thought it was cool. You turn the page and get a whole new style of illustrating the plot. I had a good time trying to determine which artists drew which panels. "Sam's Story" at the end written by Jeph Loeb was really touching as well as the Teen Titans pages before and after Sam's comic.

Green Lantern #11 really surprised me. I haven't cared too much for this relaunch over the past year, but this was my favorite comics of the series. It was one of my favorite comics I've read in a few months. I was thinking of dropping this book but not anymore. I hope it continues to surprise me.

Star Wars: Rebellion - My Brother, My Enemy #2: I think this is a cool comic. It's still early on so I don't know what it'll turn out like, but I like it so far. I really like stories where it has two very close people that find themselves on opposite sides of a conflict. This story between Luke and a childhood friend serving in the Empire is starting really good.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic #5: Finally in this issue we see why the Jedi Masters killed their padawans and I see why they did it. I don't think it will be as clear as what was revealed though. I still think that Zayne's master has a bit of the darkside within him and the murders weren't done only to protect the galaxy from a Sith threat.

As for comics coming out tomorrow, I'm getting these:
    STAR WARS LEGACY #0
    52 WEEK #5
    DETECTIVE COMICS #820
    JSA #86
    OUTSIDERS #37
    SUPERMAN RETURNS KRYPTON TO EARTH
    WONDER WOMAN #1

The ones I'm really looking forward to is the Detective issue which is winding down to the end of the story, Wonder Woman #1 because I'm wondering what major changes are happening here in order to relaunch her book, and 52 because the stories within this series are all intriguing.

The comic I'm the most interested in is the first of the 4 Superman Returns prequel comics, Superman Returns: Krypton to Earth. I think this issue is suppose to deal with the final days of Krypton and Kal-El being sent to Earth. I don't know if it will have much to do with what is going on between the time the Earth last saw Superman and when he returns in the movie as the last 3 issues of the series will have, those are the ones I really want to read. I'm all for Krypton stories though.

I was able to get all 29 issues from the Seven Soldiers story on ebay for a pretty good price, $34 after shipping. I'm looking forward to getting them in and reading them. Did the #0 issue come out before, after, or during the 7 mini series?

Could you guys recommend some good TPG for the X-Men? One dealing with Wolverine/Weapon X/etc would be wonderful.

EDIT: Also, any recommendations for really good Batman and Superman TPBs would be great as well. I'm thinking about picking up Batman: A Death In The Family and possibly Superman: For All Seasons.

Superman for All Seasons is my favorite of the Superman TPBs, I think you'll like that. I really like Tim Sale's art as well. I've heard lots of good things about Superman Secret Identity and Red Son, both of which I want to check out soon. Secret Identity is about just a normal boy with the name of Clark Kent that I think suddenly gets super powers. Something like that. Red Son is a what if story dealing with if Supes landed in Germany instead of Smallville.

I think you've already said before that you have read Batman The Long Halloween. If not read that, and also read the sequel Dark Victory if you haven't read that. I just got Batman Son of the Demon but haven't gotten a chance to read it yet. Rumor is that Grant Morrison's Batman titles coming soon will have something to do with it. Don't know much about the story except it deals with at least Talia Al Ghul. Also, Son of the Demon isn't really a TPB rather than just a one-shot.

Yup, already have "Dark Victory." Loved it, though not as much as The Long Halloween. That is an interesting what if Superman story too, might have to check that out.

Have you looked into the "Under the Hood" Batman TPB?

That's the Red Hood story right? I read it while it was coming out in single issues over the last year or so. It was a fun story that I enjoyed a lot. There's probably going to be another Red Hood trade coming out as well. This one is the first half of the story and there is another 6 or 7 issues needing to be collected to finish it out. In the second trade that will come out dealing with Red Hood, it should have Batman Annual #25 which was one of the best comics this past year IMO. I think you will like the Red Hood stories. The only problem with the Red Hood story is that there really was no resolution because of the timing of Infinite Crisis.

As for Kingdom Come, it's was good but I think you could get by just sitting in a bookstore and reading it all the way through within an hour or so.

Yeah. I checked Amazon and Vol. 2 of Under the Hood comes out in a couple months. I shouldn't have read the reviews though. Not labeling spoilers...bastards.

                Yeah, those will get you.

One TPB that I want to read that I never have is Batman Haunted Knight. It's by Jeff Loeb and Tim Sale (same guys as The Long Halloween and Dark Victory). I have no idea what it's about, but with those guys I think it'll be good. I think it came out before the other two. Have you ever read it?

That's on my list as well. I'll check it out, see how the story arc is.

Arkham Asylum is also on my list and I don't remember why, lol.

A good X-Men trade that I just picked up is the new Astonishing X-Men trade by Joss Whedon and John Cassaday (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/078...ance&n=283155). The writing is excellent and the focus is put on a smaller team of X-Men and it works out very well. Wolverine is in it.

A good Wolverine/Weapon X trade would be the Weapon X trade which basically details Wolverine's stay at Weapon X (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/078...verbulletc-20). If you're willing to check out Ultimate X-Men, the second trade from that run called Return to Weapon X is very well done (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/078...ance&n=283155).

Thanks. I'll have to look into those.

Marvel doesn't have any archive type sets like DC has by any chance?

Do you mean just massive collections of comic books in a single trade? If thats what you mean then yes they do under the "Essential" titles. They're printed in black and white, but its the cheapest way to get ahold of numerous old issues in one installment.

Hmm. I knew about those, but I was hoping there was something better. The black & white and flimsy pages turns me off.

How is the Ultimate X-Men series?

Aukevin, here's an overview of Haunted Knight.
This graphic novel is a collection of three Halloween stories involving Batman. In Fears, the Scarecrow returns to Gotham City, and he's turning the lights out for one scary Halloween. In Madness, that arch-villain the Mad Hatter is stealing children, and when he grabs Commissioner Gordon's daughter, it becomes personal. The final story is Ghosts, in which Bruce Wayne is visited by the ghost of his father, who warns him that three spirits will visit him for his own reformation; it's a Halloween version of the Christmas Carol, and Bruce hates seeing someone use his father's image - somebody needs to be taught a lesson, but who?
                          .

The first 7 trades of Ultimate X-Men are pretty well done, though the art isn't very good for some of the 3rd and 4th trades, after that though its been pretty bland and uninteresting.
