Re: The Dark Knight Discussion
Just got back from seeing it. Good movie, great follow up to Batman Begins. While I liked Ledger as the Joker I just don't see why everyone makes such a fuss over the acting job he did. I'll put his acting job on par with Jack's but IMO it's not any better. Bale's deep Clint Eastwood like voice as Batman got on my nerves, I hope he tones it down a bit in the next movie. Overall a good movie that lived up to the hype.
Ledger's going to get all the attention, and its well deserved, but I want to give the rest of cast some credit as well.
I think we'll all are already just taking Bale's work for granted. Its like MJ going 32/8/8/3 in '89 and not winning the MVP.
Caine and Freeman quietly brilliant. Gyllenhaal solid despite probably having the least to work with.
Eckhart came out of nowhere to deliver a gem of his own. Which is a good thing considering he's probably the fulcrum of the film.
Lastly Gary Oldman. 20 years ago he probably should have been the one to play the Joker instead of Jack. He was the king of those kinds of maniacal roles. To see him now play Mr Pragmatic, Jim Gordon, who is the true polar opposite of the Joker, is quite a turn. His work is being taken for granted too.
I consider this film on par with The Return of the King, which(deservedly IMO) won the Academy Awards for Best Picture and Director in 2004.Jordan Mychal Lemos

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.Comment

Re: The Dark Knight Discussion
Saw the movie yesterday, still not ready to talk about it. Suffice it to say that I loved it and plan to watch it again many more times. However, some Batman 3 villain talk....
SpoilerMy one gripe with this franchise so far is that it's burned through four of Batman's absolute best villains in just two movies, three of which have been pretty much exhausted and the fourth of whom, if he's not dead, is at least in police custody and therefore unable to be the main villain of the third movie.
The one thing Nolan has done with these villains is return them to a primal and realistic existence. No more freeze-rays, man-eating plants, mind control devices and other ridiculous gadgetry and inanity. Look at the Joker for instance - he used primordial weapons like drums of oil and simple knives, but he used them in an exotic and dangerous way so they seemed out of the ordinary. So whoever the main villain is in the next movie, we can pretty much rule out villains with superpowers or other unnatural and unrealistic existences.
The next villain also needs to tie back into the mob. Villains aside, the mob has been the main story in both movies so far and Batman finally taking them down (and rising from outcast to hero) needs to be the main plot of the third movie. So I think the best choice, for all of these reasons, would be....
Black Mask. Wikipedia describes him as follows:
Roman Sionis, a former business executive who originally hated Bruce Wayne rather than Batman, wears a Black Mask and leads the cult-like False Face Society of henchmen. Black Mask eventually became a mob boss controlling large sections of Gotham's criminal underworld.
In my opinion, we don't need a blockbuster villain like Riddler, Penguin, Catwoman, etc. I would even be ok with no villain at all. But I think Black Mask would provide a perfectly respectable villain while refocusing the movie where it should be focused - on the mob and on Batman's rise as hero of Gotham after his fall in TDK.Last edited by CaptainZombie; 07-20-2008, 05:52 PM.Comment

Re: The Dark Knight Discussion
Skreik, having seen the movie and reading your thoughts..........very excellent post and your villain of choice would fit perfectly. I am very happy that Nolan has brought this series back down to a bit more realistic approach with certain elements where it should have been, but went out of control especially with the Schumacher Batman's.Comment

Re: The Dark Knight Discussion
Skerik is definitely on to something with that...
Mostly about the 3rd movie villain, but does contain some slight movie spoilers...
SpoilerThe villain certainly has to do with the mob, as the first two have really focused on that. The Black Mask is probably one of the best choices - especially if you believe the rumor that Nolan wants a villain that has never been used before (meaning no Riddler, no Catwoman). However, there are a couple of more:
-Alberto Falcone. Carmine Falcone's son, who plays a particularly big, and realistic, role in The Long Halloween. A story like that could work, as you have a "serial killer" esque role, and the killings could draw Gotham into realizing they need Batman. They'd have to use some creativity to make Holiday work, though, since the Dent story wouldn't work.
-Rupert Thorne. Would probably be too close to Falcone in the first one, though.
-The Hangman. Cop killing serial killer draws Batman back when cops start dying and can't protect their own. Ties into the mob, as the actual killer is Falcone's daughter.
-Talia al Ghul. Pretty self-explanitory here, though this wouldn't really do much with the mob.
-Bane. Steroid-freak gone wrong.
-Julian Day, aKa Calender Man.
-Hush. A childhood friend of Bruce Wayne's, Thomas "Tommy" Elliot targets both Batman and Bruce Wayne. Although Hush's name originates from a nursery rhyme, Hush lives up to it by using manipulation and guile instead of noisy "signatures"....would need something else, though, to draw Batman back to Gotham.Comment

His family has ties back to Bruce's parents from the comic books. I think since the Black Mask has some ties to Catwoman, why not also reintroduce Catwoman in the films. Catwoman also has ties to Carmine Falcone as at one point she thought he was her father.
I love the Bane character, but I think that he deserves a film all to himself as part of a Knightfall trilogy, if that were to ever happen.
Even though elements from The Long Halloween were used for this movie, why not continue with the whole mafia storylines of Begins and Dark Knight. Hell, just name the next film The Long Halloween. While the holiday killer would never be revealed since he wasn't in the comic book series, they can still do something very cool with this.Last edited by CaptainZombie; 07-20-2008, 08:12 PM.Comment

Re: The Dark Knight Discussion
ok putting my two cents in, movie was OUTSTANDING!!!! i hate paying more than $9 for any movie nowadays but that TDK earned every penny worth. what a ride...I am glad I got the Buell- I love riding it, I love the oddball looks I get on the road- I love people asking "What IS that thing?" I love flying into a corner WAY too hot, scared spitless and sure I'll never hold it at this speed- and hearing the bike whisper "Sissy!"...Comment
