Okay guys, quick question, coming from a complete novice when it comes to AV, Blu-Ray discs, and the like.

I rented the Blu-Ray version of this movie from Netflix. I see some of you guys talking about the change of aspect ratio. I'm guessing that was intended. My question is...why?!?!

It was driving me NUTS throughout the entire movie the way it kept changing. I thought there was something wrong with the disc, my PS3, something. Now I come on here and find out it was supposed to be like that? I don't get it.

Please explain to this AV moron what the point of that was...

I think it has something to do scenes being filmed at a higher resolution for the IMAX scenes.

I watched it on Blu-Ray and it reminded me how much I love the movie.

From the start until Dent becomes Two-Face... it's one of the best films of all time. At that point it starts to slow down just a bit but is still fantastic.

The scene with two boats, one filled with criminals, and the detonators on each is fascinating. Just trying to imagine what I would do in that situation.

@TJdaSportsGuy Yep it was intended by the director. The scenes that take up the whole HD TV screen are the Imax screens. He could have cropped them to the 2:35.1 to mach the rest of the film but that would have took away from his "vision".

When the film comes back to IMAX theaters in few days (or now?) you should do yourself a favor and see it.

At first I was like wtf then I thought oh yeah the IMAX sequences. To me it makes sense and others it won't. Then again some people would "prefer" a full screen DVD/Blu-ray regardless of what the director intended, not me.

Thanks for the explanation. Count me among those that would prefer a full screen regardless. I just feel like, hey, I paid for a 32" LCD HDTV...I'd like to use the entire screen, lol.

I'm still unsure as to what I would prefer. Now, I always prefer widescreen (16:9 or greater) before full screen (4:3) aspect ratios, but I think that I really do like seeing the entire HDTV screen filled out more. I mean hey, that's still wide screen... the only thing I don't like is that 1.78 : 1 doesn't seem to have as good of quality as 2.40 : 1. I think I've used the example earlier that it's the equivalent of said image being "zoomed in" to fit your screen. But for the IMAX shots... wow!

Actually, I absolutely love widescreen, but I would prefer it much more if my HDTV had retained jet black bars. You see, instead, it adjusts with the settings of my TV. I'd rather it be its own "setting" as a pitch black so that it doesn't "bleed" with the rest of the image.

Your welcome. I certainly can see where you are coming from. That is why for 4:3 TV's they made full screen DVDs(I never bought them lol). People complained about the black bars. The full screen DVD's sometimes were known as "family" edition of the DVD. Full screen DVD's actually cropped some of the actual film and thus you don't get what the director wanted you to see.

So I totally feel ya TJdasportsGuy but I'm a indy filmmaker myself and have worked in the Hollywood Industry so I also know where the director is coming from. The "art" side of it I guess .

Widescreen aspect ratios will never effect the "quality" that is up to the transfer and many other factors but not the aspect ratio.

A film can look amazing at 1.78:1, 1.85:1, 2.35:1 etc...it doesn't matter.
