Like I said... I returned home from an away baseball tournament with these issues. I wasn't going on any sites or what have you. It's problematic because this is the family computer (including parents and little sister), and these things can't keep popping up.

At least my computer's finally running now, though.
Run Firefox as your browser and AD-Aware SE Personal to clean up the spyware. All free.

CrapCleaner (not a joke) and RegScrubXP are free programs that do a great job at cleaning your registry.

I've been using Avast for years. Very happy with it.

I like using HijackThis (HJT) on top of Anti-Virus software (its free). I use Norton, Avast, SpyBot, and HouseCall and they've all done well, but HJT helps clean up things they miss that are hidden in your registry. Just last night I removed a Trojan hidden in my registry that the Anti-virus programs missed or couldn't remove.

The only problem with HJT is that you control what is removed from your machine. This is an easy way to seriously F'up your system unless you know what your doing or get help on a forum. You can also Google each line item in the HJT report to see if its dangerous or not.

Yeah, it keeps saying "Internal Virus Database is out of date".

                    yes - Avast is free

From what I have been reading, people rank the free AV's like such:

1- AntiVir (but has no email scanner)

                    2- Avast

                    3- AVG

                      Re: Best (free) antivirus software?

Went to the AVG Free forum to see if they had a remedy for the problem. Try this:
1st things 1st.... Always double / triple check your Windows clock time even am/pm, date & year. These have to be totally correct for AVG to function properly. Hover your mouse over the clock.... You won't believe how easy it is to be just one day, month or even a year out....

After correcting the DATE/TIME.. open the AVG Test Center then the Scheduler... edit the schedule for the update and disable it... close it and then open it right back up and re-enable the update schedule. This will reset the schedule to the correct date/time again.

Worked on both my CPUs. On Security Status it should say "Your Internal Virus Database Is Up To Date" as the latest entry.

McAfee is free to those that use Comcast for those that may be unaware.

I was unaware of that, how do you get it exactly? Go to a certain website and download it? Sorry if its a dumb question.

Every time I restart my computer, it seems I'm getting the same problem where it needs to update.
