I think Ben could hear Jacob at one time, but can't anymore. Which is why he was willing to take Locke to Jacob, in the hopes that whatever "communion" Locke shares with the island would enable him to hear Jacob. Notice how desperate Ben is at the end of the episode to find out what Jacob said to Locke. Jacob's words are Ben's method of controlling his people - that and the belief that he was born on the island and is their true leader. I think a lot of what Locke said to Ben at the end of the episode is true. That he is a fraud and that he is pathetic. But he relies on his connection with Jacob to control the Others and he has lost that connection.
I'm also puzzled by Alpert's ability to stay young, as well as the ring of either ash or gunpowder surrounding Jacob's house. And I know the producers have stated repeatedly that everything will be scientifically explainable by the end of the show, but I think they're really pushing the envelope with the scene in Jacob's house after Locke shines the flashlight on Ben.
And there's no way Locke is dead. My favorite part of last night's episode was when he beat Mikhail to a pulp.
