Re: ***LOST Official Season 3 Discussion**** (Contains West Coast spoilers)

I think Ben could hear Jacob at one time, but can't anymore. Which is why he was willing to take Locke to Jacob, in the hopes that whatever "communion" Locke shares with the island would enable him to hear Jacob. Notice how desperate Ben is at the end of the episode to find out what Jacob said to Locke. Jacob's words are Ben's method of controlling his people - that and the belief that he was born on the island and is their true leader. I think a lot of what Locke said to Ben at the end of the episode is true. That he is a fraud and that he is pathetic. But he relies on his connection with Jacob to control the Others and he has lost that connection.

I'm also puzzled by Alpert's ability to stay young, as well as the ring of either ash or gunpowder surrounding Jacob's house. And I know the producers have stated repeatedly that everything will be scientifically explainable by the end of the show, but I think they're really pushing the envelope with the scene in Jacob's house after Locke shines the flashlight on Ben.

And there's no way Locke is dead. My favorite part of last night's episode was when he beat Mikhail to a pulp.

I don't think its an aging issue with Richard. They just did a poor job of trying to make him look younger with the long hair and same face. By body size he would have only had to be about 10 years older than young Ben when they meet for the first time. That same 10 year difference could be for the present.

I didn't even see the brief image of Jacob when I was watching.

      Very strange stuff this week.

But Ben's definitely like 50 (weren't all the cars driving by when he was born 50's style?), so that would make Richard around 60. There's no way.

I was shocked I caught it. I usually always miss stuff like that. I was just shocked like everyone else with what was happening and then they flashed his profile and I paused it right away. Gotta love DVR's.

Lots of interesting theories however I'm still lost.

Questions. What was the name of the little girl who befriended Ben when he arrived on the island? Does she have any impact to present day Ben? Was she also part of the Darma team eliminated too?

I think her name was Annie, and I assume she was killed along with everyone else, but I thought it was strange they never showed the adult version of her.

Yeah, Annie. I'm assuming at this point that she was either killed during the purge, or died during her pregnancy with Ben's child. I'm sure we'll find out what happened to her before long, but the way Ben was looking at that doll leads me to believe there's more to the story than just her dying in the purge of the Dharma folks.

Ow! My head hurts from thinking about all of this. Great to see things moving along though.

I caught the glimpse of Jacob last night, but it was too quick to make anything of it. Seeing the still image and the talk of him being Locke has me thinking Jacob just may be Locke.

Remember right before they went in to meet Jacob, Ben said that Jacob hates technology, much like Locke does. Add to that the time-shifting of Desmond. Maybe it could actually be Locke in some form or time.

My best theory at this point is that when they are on the island they are no longer part of the "real" world. They may really be dead in the real world, but getting to the island has either shifted them in time or are in some sort of alternate reality. Maybe Ben thinks Locke needs to die because if Jacob is Locke, there can't be 2 of them there at the same time???

These are all just guesses, of course. This is getting to the point where I may go buy all the seasons on DVD just to see how everything pieces together. Hopefully there has been a plan since day 1, and things from seasons 1 & 2 still tie in to what's going on now.

The 1 question I want answered is: What was that 4-toed statue Sayid saw when they used the sailboat to find the Others?

What the heck was going on last night?

                      1. Locke is not dead - no way, no how. Just in last weeks episode, they ephasized how quickly Locke heals when he took the bandage off his hand.

                      2. I am still not convinced there is a Jacob. Because Ben made sure it stayed dark in there, its possible that Ben was making all this stuff happen with "Smoke and Mirrors"(That is if the island is really a tangible place).

                      3. Is Locke turning into Ben's split personality, alter ego? Locke is so out of character and it seems like he is pushing the envelope in the way that a split personality eats at someon'e soul.

                      4. Why did everyone just sit there when Locke beat the crap out of Mikhail, leads me to believe that some or all of the others may be Ben's imaginary friends.

                      5. How do the writers scientifically explain the "fountain of youth"....Could Ben ben have multiple personalities and some of these personalities just have stayed the same age?

That's about the only way that the writers can scientifically explain this.

We know Ben is not getting killed off in the great battle between the Losties and the Others because there's much more we need to learn about him in flashbacks (what happened to Annie? how did he join the Hostiles? how did he come to "speak" to Jacob?). This show rules!

I thought this was supposed to be revealed before the season ended? It was something that IGN posted when they did an interview with the writers.

I definately think there is something to Richard not being so old. I think the Island has an effect on this.

There's a theory on lostpedia that Locke is Jacob:

Pros: Given the possibility of cyclical time on the Island, Locke could also be Jacob. In this theory, Locke would need to be much older as Jacob. The potential would exist for a young Locke to meet up with an older Locke (Jacob) at some point. The biblical Jacob was a trickster, and Locke tricked Sawyer into killing Cooper. Locke was asked "are you Him" by Desmond, to which he replied yes. Locke has a special connection to the Island, which, if a cyclical time situation exists, would give him unique insight. Also, Locke has stated he has no plans to leave the Island in the event of rescue. In addition, comparing Jacob and Locke's portraits together reveal a stunning similarity.
Cons: The theory requires acceptance of a cyclical time stream on the Island. Locke refused to believe that Jacob exists in "The Man Behind the Curtain".
Conclusion: Overall, the cyclical time stream may yet be true, but Locke is probably not Jacob.
The Man in Black represents the Grim Reaper aka Death (Smoke Monster), Jacob represents Life. As "Death" the Man in Black can take the form of the deceased, while "Life" is literally immortal with the ghost of Jacob possibly being the only one of genuine origin. The Island is a symbolic reference to Paradise. There are many biblical and mythological beings that can be put on either side. The truth is probably that Jacob/MIB represent many of these archetypes put together, be it biblical...

Regarding the gray sand around Jacobs cabin I think it's vocanic ash. They made a point to talk about the Volcanic eruptions that have occured on the island in the past. What that has to do with Jacob I haven't a clue.

But like Skerik posted, I have no idea how the writers are going to give a scientific explanation to any of this. I really hope they stick to their word and I hope it isn't something from Stephen Hawkings book - like they are stuck in a worm hole or something ********.

I wish I could get into this show again, it just doesn't do it for me anymore. Too many frustrations of question after question with no or little answers.

I've given up on 2 shows that I absolutely loved in 24 and Lost this season. Bad year for TV for me.

They said in the most recent podcast that the statue you mentioned will be addressed in a future episode, probably not this season though. I'm so glad I didn't give up after the first part of season 3, this last half of the season has been amazing.

Except that Julliette was approached by Richard in the States.

But you could be right about all of this being in Ben's head. The internet is full of information that links so many of the characters names, what they read, weird occurances and such to past literature or events.
For all we know, Ben is in a coma in some hospital dying of cancer on his spine. While in the hospital he could have read a great deal and when he finally slipped into his coma he created this bizarre world where he is cured and is ruler over all these people.
That's probably going to be how it ends and if it does I'm going to personally hunt down every single writer and producer and uppercut them all in their colons.
