Re: ***LOST Official Season 3 Discussion**** (Contains West Coast spoilers)

I don't think they've "abandoned" an explanation for the number just because they haven't come up in a while. There are still 3 seasons left, so the show is only half-way complete.

I think we'll eventually see an explanation Hurley being in the madhouse with Libby and how/why the other guy in there knew the numbers. Maybe he was someone who had previously escaped from the island and was once responsible for pushing the button. Now he's completely nuts and just keeps repeating the numbers (which Hurley hears).

I'd be very surprised if they don't give further explanation and I'm patient enough to give them more time before chalking it up as something they've simply abandoned.

The reason why I'm bummed is because my sole reason for sticking with this show was based on the belief that everything could be explained with realistic, scientific explanations.
It was fun watching each episode and saying "Oooh, how are they going to explain that?" and then everyone else was saying the same thing. Speculations were rampant and people were all trying to throw ideas out there with realistic explanations. But now that's all out the window.

I'm not sure if it's the producers fault or if someone made it up, but there are a lot of Lost fans that heard them say that everything could be explained through science. Either that was a grosse misquote or they did retract that statement after adding some things they know they can't explain.

So to put my disappointment into perspective, imagine you're watching Law & Order when suddenly Shaft comes from the shadows, blows away the bad guys and everyone high 5's him. It would kill the show for many people, because they believed the show to be somewhat close to how crime solving is done. (before anyone jumps on that statement, I read an article where a former NY Police Detective rated the current cop shows. Law & Order ranked the highest in terms of realism. The only thing he said was farfetched was how fast they were able to obtain information from various witnesses. But he believed that had to be done when you consider the 60 minute time retraint the show is in).

My entire interest has always been, "I can't wait for them to reveal all these secrets and mysteries - and in a realistic fashion". But now it sounds as if the Producers themselves don't even know if everything is going to be revealed. And from that interview it's clear that it's going to be some strange science fiction concept. Some viewers might like that, but I don't. If I want mystery I'll try to figure out my wife.

I'm obviously going to continue watching the show up to the end. But I'm no longer that intrigued with what's going on with this island. Because in the end, the producers have made it clear they can make up any explanation they want. They're not holding themselves to any realistic boundaries.

"Why can Locke heal so quickly? Because on the Island, anyone with the intials J.L. is like Wolverine." And then the next episode, Locke will sprout metal claws from the back of his hand.

One last point. If the producers did actually say that everything could be explained by science and then retract that statement, how can we trust them on anything else they've said? They've mentioned repeatedly that the Losties are not dead, and this whole thing is not playing out in someone's mind. But can we believe them that this won't be the case come episode 119?
Heck, for all we know, they might wrap up the show by making it out to be a giant movie lot where this was nothing but a big movie being made - starring Evangline Lilly and that guy from the Hobbit!

You're overreacting. Just because things may not be explained by science as you expected doesn't mean crazy things are going to happen like Locke growing claws and killing everyone or Rambo coming to the rescue.

The show has set it's limitations. If aliens ever presented themselves on the show, Lost would have jumped the shark and I'd bet ratings would plummet fast. But, that won't happen because having aliens on the show would go against the rules of Lost.

Not sure if you understand, but the point is, every show and movie makes up a set of rules that are explained very early. In other words, you will accept certain things as a viewer if the show/movie made it plausible early. Lost has always been presented as a realistic show with an Island full of mystery. The only out of this world presence on the Island is the monster. But, since the monster made an appearance extremely early in the show, it was acceptable to the viewers.

Just relax because you won't see extremely abnormal stuff. Everything will be explained within the rules already set for the show.

And if time travel is your worry, then at least it's only one character that has receieved glimpses of the future. I wouldn't consider it out of this world enough to say it's a terrible addition to the show.

But that's just it, Lost has never done this. They have never set any boundaries. All they've ever done is add one weird thing after the next. Ethan's super human strength. Desmond's visions and going back in time. Jacob, Richards slow aging process, the button, cancer curing, paralysis cured, etc.
There have never been any boundaries that this show has limitied itself to. They can do whatever they want from this point out and nobody here can ever say "that shouldn't be happening", because there's no reason to believe it can't happen on the island.

I mean, heck, just look at the plane crash. There should have been NO survivors from that, so maybe they did set the 'boundaries' on the first show by saying "there are no boundaries - look at how many people survived with no scratches or broken bones".
Saying this, not one fan of Lost should get mad or shake their head if Aliens do come flying down from the sky. Tell me where this idea has ever been said to be or proven to be non-plausable from the start?

Just relax because you won't see extremely abnormal stuff.
I'm sorry if I'm coming across rude picking apart this statment but I have to ask; So going back in time, seeing the future, no longer being paralysed, having terminal cancer cured, an invisible man, a smoke monster that can see your past and future, a 'box' that can conjure up whatever you want, these things aren't abnormal and explainable?

I think you answered your own question when you said "I mean, heck, just look at the plane crash. There should have been NO survivors from that, so maybe they did set the 'boundaries' on the first show by saying "there are no boundaries - look at how many people survived with no scratches or broken bones".

That honestly pretty much sets up the Island as being capable of doing things you can't see in the outside world.

But, when I mention aliens I say that because that's an external addition not from the Island. If people can walk again on the Island and be cured from cancer then that's internal and the show has explained that the Island is responsible for those things.

All I'm saying is that I believe that when the show is over, people will realize that they overreacted in thinking that the producers would go overboard and do something that doesn't make sense within the fantasy of Lost. And if I'm wrong, trust me when I say I will be the first to tune out.

My point was you can't really understand the show without pondering it, it's not just entertainment like watching King of Queens.

Good points. I'm just worried that the 'answer' will be something really bizzarre and out of place.

And as far as taking this show too seriously, it's hard not too. Like someone pointed out, it's not King of Queens or The Simpsons.

I wish I could say the same for Jack. It appears that he will be the major character from here on out, which is very unfortunate from where I am sitting. He's the worst character on the show by far.
