I thought the first episode was good, nothing too original and a little predictable, but still good. It seemed to capture the same enviroment the movie did. I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes from here.

Re: Friday Night Lights show
I thought the show was pretty good.
I coach in the district Permian is in, and it's a little sad that Permian has slipped since its glory days. Actually, it's good for us, Abilene High. The district is still competitive, but it looks pretty weak this year.
Interesting fact: I spoke with Gary Gaines, the Permian head coach played by Billy Bob Thornton, about the book at a coaching clinic. He said he has never read the book, but from what he has heard there are many inaccuracies. He is a class act all the way. He is a solid christian man and is very soft spoken.Comment

Re: Friday Night Lights show
I hear ya there, my buddy and I were watching and pretty much called the angle of the star qb (and an ND commit?? damn, lol) going down and the backup with the win. Now its just a matter if he gets w/ the head cheerleader, blonde slut, or coaches daughter (my vote is the last after the restaurant scene). For everyone who saw it, was this filmed in Austin? I only ask cause I'm from there, the Westerly team that they played was a clone of Westlake (big 5A in Austin) and the burger joint they were in at the beginning looked very familliar as well, just curious? Either way, thought the show was really well done, i just hope they dont go cliche the whole wayComment

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)Comment

Re: Friday Night Lights show
Good show. I loved the atmosphere. Only one problem (besides predictabilty and cliche): Where's the Defense??? I'd love to see them key in on their Middle Linebacker or Safety. All they've showed that entire first episode was the QB, Backup QB, Runningback and Fullback. They didn't even show one defensive play in the entire game, it was just the other team showing off it's 4 fakes/counters per play.Comment

Re: Friday Night Lights show
Very bad news for FNL fans.
The show completely bombed in terms of ratings. It only pulled in a 4.7 rating.
I said this show would probably be cancelled during the first season in another thread, and it looks to be true.Comment

Re: Friday Night Lights show
You could see that coming because the show is so niche. It might be able to do better on a WB, CW type channel because of the demographics that those channels cater to... but I didn't see it surviving on any of the prime networks.Comment

Re: Friday Night Lights show
I think many people expected this to be a "football show." Once word gets out that it's a quality human drama about towns like where many of us live, with football as a backdrop, then maybe ratings will increase.
Too many people think this is a sports show. It's not.

Re: Friday Night Lights show
I think the show would have done better if it was on a sports network, such as ESPN. See: Playmakers.
Putting it on NBC in the evening is like airing Days of Our Lives on ESPN during the day. I'm not surprised this show is not holding up well against other shows in the same slot. I'm also not really sure who the target audience is.
If I want to watch sports, I will watch sports. I personally don't see the attraction of trying to turn a high school football program into a soap opera. And in general I think sports dramas are for too predictable and cliche to be worth serious consideration or investment on a nationally broadcasted level.
The show might turn out to be great and stick around, but I just think it is trying to appeal to audiences that don't really exist in numbers that will allow it to be on air for an extended period of time.
To me, sports brings its own drama without trying to falsely create it through actors and off-field relationships. And when not real, any portrayel of sports is likely to be overdone, predictable, and cliche. Attributes that aptly describe the sole reason I love sports to begin with. They are real, genuine, and not fake.Enjoy football? Enjoy Goal Line Blitz!Comment
