i just got done watching seasons 1-3 in about 3 weeks (netflix is the best way to watch these type of shows. don't pay $65 a season. If you really want a season, it's pretty simple. I can't talk about it here but it just takes some computer literation.) anyway. wow. i will talk about iwhat i saw so
SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER on SEASONS 1-3
I love Shield, 24, Prison Break, but when it comes to storylines and authenticity and character development, the Wire is the best. Shield is awesome but how realistic is it that vic is a bad guy to all these drug dealers and they don't do anything to him in 6 seasons?!
Now, the closest show to compare Wire to is Shield. It's not fair to compare the other two because they are totally different. Like my brother asked me. what show would you pick to watch if you could. It's tough. On one hand, 24 because of all the action and stuff that goes on (i will admit that season 6 has been one of the worst.) but on the other hand, you feel connected to the "wire" characters. Kima's storyline is annoying, the fat department guy and probably a little less of the fat detective who gets drunk all the time and hung out with McNulty a lot. However, the drug characters are awesome. How they transformed Michael from a kid on the straight to a murderer was awesome. It didn't take 1 episode which would mae it unrealistic and dumb but it was a gradual process. There's a difference between a show like Sopranos and Wire about gradual process. Sopranos used to be #1 in my book but it's gone down (even though this season has been better). How many times do we see Christopher involved or Paulie. Tony is the main character and should be, but there has been no murders to the big characters and just haven't seen the development. Wire has perfect timing.
Damn I have typed alot. Anyway, here's my summary of season 1-3
I ranked all seasons as follows:
#1 Season 3: From the beginning to end, this season was brilliant. From the free zones to the gang war to the complexity of Stringer Bell's character (wanted to leave the drug world but still had some past ways with him putting hits on Brother Mazou, Deangelo and Omar. I didn't think 3 could top 4 but it does.
#2 Season 4: I didn't think this season could be topped until I saw 3. Unlike some others, I liked the Carcetti angle and everything that went around it. The 2 best plotlines were Marlo's ruthlessness in the drug game and the development of the 4 kids. Michael probably will be a big character in season 5 and should be because his performance was awesome.
#3 Season 1: There's a dropoff from those top 2 but this season was still really good. it was a little slow in the beginning I thought. However, it really gets running in the middle of the season. I just didn't like the police part as much (in the office only).
#4 Season 2: i wrestle with which one i like more and i could change my mind based on what i read from others but in my opinion its the worst because they didn't get into the drug world as much as i would like. ziggy and the union chief had a little too much airtime. His nephew (bad with names) could've been used a bit better. they didn't utilize him enough. Still, i liked the ending because there wasn't a happy ending to it. they didn't catch the greek and the other guy.
Some people are turned off by its darkness and want heroes and jack bauer's everywhere so they don't watch it. However, if you stick with it for 3 episodes then you'll be hooked. simple as that. it's not like 24 or prison break which will get you hooked right away, but give it some time. it's the most enjoyable and intellectual piece of work i've ever seen and this is coming from someone who is as far as they can be from the drug world and what goes on in that type of life.
this was long but it felt good writing it.
