Okay, I'll try to be as fair as I can without ANY spoilers.
First of all... sorry for not posting last night. Couldn't get in the room and start typing with my roommate sleeping.
Anyway, I definitely need to give this movie another look, just to really see what I think about it. Not because I didn't like it... but because I need to repiece it together. Let me first say that this movie would have been much better if it were its rumored 2 hours 10 minutes, instead of 1 hour 47 minutes. That's just my opinion... it could have been possible, and it honestly should have been done.
What do I think of the movie, though? Dark, scary, and very non-Hollywood. This movie is nothing like Saw or Saw II, but it certainly follows its footsteps very well without going way off or without repetition. Shawnee Smith was great acting her part, but I don't really know how much I like her character. Tobin Bell was fantastic! Anyway, like I said, this movie had a very dark tone to it, and I really enjoyed how they didn't go in the direction of cheap tricks and bloodsplattering stuff just to make money and entertain the younger crowd. If you guys are truly a fan of Saw and wanted this movie to not go in that Hollywood Saw II direction that it did, then you should love this movie.
I understand that most people loved the first movie most for its ending. In other words, Saw wouldn't be what it was without its ending. So, let me just close out by saying that if they were to make an ending for this one as jaw-dropping as the first one, it would probably be the best of the three Saw movies. Not saying that they didn't do that, though. Let's just say that I think they ended it in such a way that making a fourth Saw would be a stretch.
Saw III does in fact work as a standalone film, but I would not advise to anybody to see this one only (or first). See them sequentially... it's worth it.
If you want the Hollywood approach, you probably don't want to see this. If you are truly a Saw diehard and appreciate the character development and sympathize for players of the game at one point or another (and don't just appreciate these movies for their endings alone), this is DEFINITELY worth the money you spend seeing it.
As for me? Of my top five movies of all time. If anybody that ever sees it wants me to PM them on what I think separates it from being perfect (of course, spoilers included), just let me know. I have a lot to say, though. I was really intrigued by this trilogy, and I love it to death. Let's just pray to God that a Saw IV (or S4W) isn't made.
