How come the A's didn't have home field advantage for that series if they were the dominant and favorites to win that World Series?

Because homefield alternated between the leagues, and 1988 was a homefield year for the NL. The A's were 104-58; the Dodgers were 94-67.

Ohh, I see. So back then during the 80s, 81 would be homefield for the AL and 82 would be homefield for the NL, and so forth, right?

The final minutes of VT/WVU in 1999, 22-20 for VT and pretty much propelled them into the NC game.

Yep. That's exactly how it worked. It was like that from as far back as I can remember all the way until the 2002 or 2003 WS.
