    Pan's Labyrinth

    Has anyone seen this?

I haven't seen a movie get his many 4 star reviews in a while.

    Interested in checking it out.

On a side note..isn't the director, Guierrmo Del Toro (sp?) the guy who made that movie "Powder" and is a former child molestor?

Um, no, That's Victor Salva, he did the Jeepers Creepers movies.

I want to see this really bad.... FYI, it's in subtitles.

Surprised it took this long to make a thread since the film got such glowing reviews. For some reason I've yet to get around to watching it though. Probably really soon.

        Ah...I see.

I have no problem with subtitles. Apparently EVERYONE is loving this flick. Need to catch it before it goes off the big screen.

Suppose to be VERY dark and violent as well.

It's an incredible experience. I don't know if I'd give it four stars as a story, but I do for the entire movie-going experience. Great cinematics, top-notch performances, some powerful, powerful images, some disturbing scenes -- it's a movie I'll never forget.

and seeing it on the big screen in a dark theatre makes it.

I might have a chance to see this--my local theater miraculously added showtimes for it. Did it just go wide? I remember hearing reviews about it for a while.

                  Re: Pan's Labyrinth

I saw it last weekend and had been trying to muster up the motivation to make a topic.

In short, it's one of the best films I've ever seen and I'm one who is usually very critical of any movie I watch (especially when I'm paying 9 bucks to see it). It's the type of movie that affects you and will stay with you after you view it. It's a very dark film, even the scenes one would describe as fantasy are bleak, but it does have a positive message.

For thos who want to know a bit about the plot, it's about a girl who's mother just remarried and is about to give birth to a child her husband is convinced will be his first son. The husband is a captain in the fascist Spanish army and the movie takes place after the Spanish civil war. Ofelia, the young girl, and her mom are off to where the Captain (as he is referred to) is stationed as the army tries to round up the last remaining rebel troops. The Captain is a cold, sadistic man only concerned with the birth of his son and harbors no apparent affection for Ofelia or her mother. He insists he be present for the birth of his son, which is why he summons his wife to his side despite her being very late in the pregnancy and ill. As a result, Ofelia hates him while her mother is constantly trying to please him. Ofelia loves fairy tales and she uses them as her escape. Near where they are stationed is an old labyrinth and it is in there she meets (presumably) Pan who informs her she is really the princess of a far off land. To prove that her innocence and purity is intact, she must perform three tasks. From there the movie shifts between the fantasy and the real world as the audience finds out that there is a rebel movement against the Spanish army with insiders located where they are staying. The acting is excellent and if you don't come away despising The Captain there's something wrong with you. As someone mentioned, it is in Spanish which may bother some. I found that after a few minutes I stopped noticing them as the story pulled me in. When I recall scenes in my head I recall them as if the characters were speaking in English. The only time the subtitles are jarring is when they come on the screen a bit prematurely and you end up reading the line before it's spoken.

This may be a bit of a fairytale, but it deserves it's R rating. There are some really graphic scenes that will make some squirm in their seats (specifically a scene where one character sutures a wound in a crude manner with everything being shown). The visuals are fantastic and the pacing is perfect. I was completely sucked in and never once even checked my cell phone during the film to see what time it was or whatever. It's also a movie that will appeal to men and women. The only people who won't enjoy are those who can't handle the violence, who hate subtitles, or just think a girl exploring her imagination is stupid and are unable to get past that. I really can't recommend this film enough, give it a shot if you get the chance and it's playing near you.

Guillermo del Torro actually directed Hell Boy, Blade II, and Mimic. Probably the most popular of his films, though I've heard Cronos is very good.

And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Sounds very interesting. I will definitely check this one out. I only see one or two movies a year.
While I won't dismiss a film with subtitles, it really does detract from the experience for me. I like to be able to watch the characters and the cinematogrophy and having to watch the bottom half of the screen and read takes a little away from it all. But if the film is good enough....it's worth it.
                        Thanks for the recommendation!

I use closed caption on all my movies and tv at home so it doesn't bother me in the least. Since I read very fast it does not distract me at all to have it there. The only time I remove it is during sports games as it's not needed and covers up some of the action. You guys might be surprised how much dialogue you miss if you turn the CC on.

As for this movie, I've never seen a movie get so highly rated on rottentomatoes.com, the last time I did I believe was one of my all-time favorite movies The Pianist so there's no question i'm going to see this movie, possibly over the weekend, if not then Monday for sure.

Really? Are you hearing impaired? If not..why the use of closed caption?

Those of you that enjoyed it, if you haven't already, check out his other film, The Devil's Backbone. It's really good and he calls Pan's Labyrinth a spiritual sequel to that movie.
