2 questions

1. If we stop producing the chemicals and such that cause global warming doesn't that mean that the chemicals etc. are still in our atmosphere?

2. My freind says that Global warming isn't real (I think he is full of s***)
and that the Earth is just on a 20 year cycle where it gets really hot and really cold and the only reason why we weren't worried about it then was because we didn't understand that, is that actually true?

The point of all of this was brought out well by some commentator I heard on the radio recently (sorry, can't recall or didn't hear his name). Basically, all of this bastardizes the pure definition of "science". Science establishes the study to skeptical ends of occurences and phenomenon (i.e., proving the null hypothesis). That is, you set out to exhaust, proving by all means necessary, the factual reasons of an occurence (or not), not promote an agenda for gain of profit/power/control.

ALWAYS follow the money trail people.

Oh I'm sure they're true but that doesn't necessarily prove global warming. I didn't watch the video and don't know what they are arguing but I think we're going into some kind of cycle. I don't know, it just makes more sense to me.. how do you explain why there's "record highs" from different decades and years.

I agree it SHOULDN'T be a political issue, but when you have Al Gore, a politician on one side as the current de facto spokesman and on the other side you have Rush Limbaugh (the unnamed commentator above) you can't really have a debate.

It's interesting though when you have scientific consensus and world bodies saying that the planet is warming on average, that carbon and sulfur dioxide emissions are having an impact, and yet it's still shot down as bunk.

Granted, on a larger or shorter scale the warming can seem temporary and just a natural shift as well.

I'm just concerned for my son, and his future children since for too many people the world revolves solely around the "here and now". Whether it's deficits, pollution, entitlements, development, etc. That's a bi-partisan issue. Until the younger generation of Americans starts to vote and pay attention the AARP crowd and boomers will only vote and care about what's beneficial to them in the near future.

*As an aside, I love the swipe at how I'm somehow reading from the Democratic Underground. Give me a break! If someone feels one way or the other, and I'm guilty of this, it seems to always devolve into a partisan jab at the other. I'm sorry for my insinuation and deleted those sentences. Geez!*

This is exactly what I'm talking about. Unless you give an unfettered source for "scientific consensus", you can't just spew out drive-by media phrases like this.

Well....actually, you can. But, really, that's the definition of "bunk".

Not a swipe or a jab....just a simple comment. Don't be so sensitive (unless there's a reason to be). I think it speaks volumes that I'm not the only one who thought that when I read your post. It makes one wonder...

I've read an awful lot about Global Warming over the years as I don't feel the public side we're getting holds much water and is probably more propaganda than anything (ie: An Inconvenient Truth). From what I've read, I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle. The Global Warming problem isn't non-existent and without merit, but it's not as serious as some might want us to believe IMO.

Anyone realize that the southern ice caps in Mars are melting? Does that mean Mars is suffering from Global Warming as well? How do those that believe strongly in Global Warming explain this? I'm not saying that to be a wise guy....I just haven't heard any answer that makes sense.

Without getting onto one side or another on this debate, let me just ask this: What harm is there in taking steps to reduce our effect on the planet? Why is this such an issue? We should all want to do things that make our planet healthier, even if it is for the ultra-long term. We may not be effecting the overall health of our planet right now, but why not take steps to reduce our overall impact now, when we have the opportunity?

I think that is the part that gets lost in the debate.

Because WE don't have an large of an effect on the planet. Where is all the oil from the Valdez spill? It was broken down and consumed by the vast ocean waters.

But, there is nothing wrong with being smart about our resources. However, that's not the issue. The issue, unfortunately IS political. So it's hard not to get that way. I mean think about it.....why is a former VP and Presidential candidate (and a less than credible one at that) brought forth as the spokesman to champion this notion versus a credible individual in the meteorological community? And on top of it....he win's an Oscar for it? Makes you wanna go "hmmmmm".

Once again, Eric the Red was herding sheep and growing grapes on Greenland in the 10th century. So why colonize on a place that must have been considerably COLDER 11 centuries ago? Because it wasn't. It's cyclical.....the Earth takes care of itself.

I agree, it shouldn't be a debate but that's what politicians want to make it. Now don't get me wrong, people should care for the environment no matter (hell, we have littering laws) but I'm just not buying into the global warming argument, I guess that's the way I see it.

Polices that were implemented to combat ozone depletion have already worked. So why can't you accept that it's possible that humans could be responsible for either accelerating temperature cycles or actually causing global warming?

I would like to think outside of a full scale nuclear war, the Earth is far too powerful for us to have a huge impact.
