I'm going to go to the Apple store tomorrow during work and ask when they are going to start the free software upgrade plan... soon I hope.

Don't waste your time, they don't know. Another thing, they've never "thrown in" an upgrade to the OS with boxed CPU unless the standalone version was already released. It might change this time, but I somehow doubt it.

Also, it's on the roadmap for October, but there's no official date set. It could be pushed back again.

That's not true. I had a friend who purchased his Macbook pending the release of the last OS. He was given the free upgrade option and was able to pick it up at an Apple store.

The difference here, however, is he purchased it AFTER they released a set date for the OS. You were able to order the OS the day he made his purchase (pre-order) but it wasn't officially out yet. I'm sure they will do the same.

Again, until they put a solid release date and you can purchase the new OS, you won't see them offering the "free upgrade" option.

I went anyway since I wanted to play around with the Macs. Think I spent half my lunch in there messing around and I liked what I saw.

The keyboard was pretty hot but I guess it could be from being on all day.

Going to have to get used to the one button mouse deal though.

The newest mouse is touch sensitive and you have both a left and a right click.

Brand new iMac's released today....


I'm thinking about picking one up when Leopard releases in October...

Ill be adding the wireless keyboard and mouse of course.

Pretty sweet...I think if I were to get a mac for my next computer it'd be a MacBook or a MacBook Pro, but the iMac looks decent.

they also released iLife 08 today...

i use iMovie a lot, and they have really revamped that one...

I'll probably get the upgrade soon just for that

I have a macbook and love it. I need to upgrade the ram on it, but other than that it is perfect. I've had it for about 6 months now and enjoy it far more than my windows desktop. I have CS3 & Logic Pro 7 on there and have a blast with both of them. I just wish I was better with Logic. ha.

I upgraded now because since I am a college student, we get the new OS for $69. So even if I don't get a free upgrade, $69 on top of $2400 isn't too terrible.

Also: If I want to play Civ IV and all of it's expansions, do I have to buy the Mac version, or can I somehow boot into Windows (or have them running concurrently) and just use the PC version?


I don't know much about Macs. I just switched and my MBP hasn't even shipped yet.

You can get Parallels Desktop if you want to run Windows and Mac OS simultaneously. Or just get Boot Camp if you don't need to run them together.

I can't wait until October. I almost went for it this weekend and I was going to purchase one of the new 20" iMacs but $130 to wait two more months, I think I can do it. I am sick and tired of Windows and I hear that Vista is a piece of garbage.

With bootcamp, I should be able to play any PC game, right?

I know Leopard's coming out in October, but does anyone know exactly when?

Also, is a new Macbook planned anytime soon? Because that's what I'll be getting once Leopard is out and I don't want to buy one and have an updated one come out shortly after I get mine.

Here is why I love Apple.


I have had my Macbook Pro for about 18 months.

My power cord recently suffered from the melt problem that some cords have been experiencing, so I took it in to replace it.

They replaced the $85 dollar piece no questions asked, even though it was out of warranty.

I then began talking to the guy about my battery, and about how it recently had been getting poor charges and short lifetimes.... and he replaced that to, free of charge.

So I walked out with $200+ worth of hardware, no questions asked, and no hassle
