or $10 on ebay. My dell cord died about 2 years ago and I paid about $10 total for a new one and it's still going strong.

imac ? or do you mean a mac book (laptop). Imac is a desktop. I have an imac and it's best to have your imac connected to your router for the fastest speed.

My friend did the same thing in his apartment building but eventually he had to pay for internet access as I'm guessing the owners either wised up or cut it off.

Not to mention it's also illegal to piggy back off other people's internet connections.

I told this to my friend also but it's good that you mention it. Completely skipped my mind.

I would be more worried of the data transfer. You never know whose access point that is. If I wanted, I could open up my router and let anyone connect... and then filter the data being transferred and "steal" their personal information. Would I do that? No, but I could.

There are those are there that would and that's exactly why I always tell everyone to get your own connection.

No, you're right. Wireless can't compete with speeds of a wired connection unless you have 802.11n connections on both end. Which I doubt anyone here does.

But again, I'm speaking from a technical viewpoint. Some might say it "feels" the same, so... whatever.

yeah, I was going to use my airport mode on my iMac like a router for my lap top down stairs (hooking my modem directly to my iMac instead of the router first) , but read that the air port mode isn't as good as a regular router.

But setting up a iMac is the easiest thing in the world. My internet, printer etc all worked instantly when I plugged them in. No rebooting the cpu, no installing and downloading drivers.

And the thing has never froze up in 6 months.

Need some help. I'm wanting to get a laptop and went looking on Ebay.

Here's what I found:
Apple iBook G3 Laptop
800 MHZ
256 MB
30 GB

$290 (free shipping)

It has a few dings/scratches but nothing too bad.

This iBook is an off lease item and has been reconditioned by our Apple technician. There are very MINIMAL scratches and scuffs on the case/cover(see pictures) Some feet on the bottom case may also be missing.This iBook is also missing both (left and right) LCD "cushions" (see picture for what a LCD "cushion" is). It is cosmetic only and also does NOT hinder with the closing or opening of this iBook.

This auction INCLUDES an a/c adapter.

The battery IS intact and will hold a charge, however, we do not test how much life is left in the battery.

Would you snatch this up for the price?

I would snatch it up. Sucks they don't test battery life though. But still...$290 and it's been professionally reconditioned.

I would pass on that iBook. The price seems a bit steep for what you're getting. For one thing, the little cosmetic details like missing feet and LCD cushions would drive me crazy over time. Secondly, you're going to need to buy more RAM if you want to do anything in OS X with that machine. And thirdly, you might want to check if the G3 800's were some of the machines with the chronic logic board problems.

Having said that, if you can find a G3 iBook at a good price, definitely go for it. I have a seven-year-old G3 500 iBook (the first of that design) and it still does a great job as an internet and word processing machine. Not only that, but the design has held up really well. Even as a seven-year-old machine, it still looks more modern and cutting edge than my new HP laptop from work!

I wouldn't buy anything PowerPC based (G3 or G4). Software binaries are all moving towards Intel architecture.

You'd be better off buying a cheap laptop with a dual core and making it a hackint0sh.

The inevitable has happened, I finally got the Mac I have been dreaming about for years now lol. It is awsome. I got the 24 inch I MAc and I bought the Adobe web design premium with it and at this point I am in heaven. the only thing I am missing is the right click button.
