Is there anything free that is similar to CleanMyMac? I like the app but not willing to pay $30 for it.

OnyX is by far the most popular Mac maintenance program, and it is free. To trim unneeded languages and binary code from your apps there is a program called Xslimmer, but it costs $12.95. I bought it though and love it. It saves you space and some programs will run faster because you are deleting all Power PC code and leaving only the native Intel code in the app. So they will load faster and run faster with less code to read through.

Awesome man, thanks. You have been very helpful with getting me set up here, I appreciate it.

Final question, should I run anything for security? From what I know I don't see it is needed and from reading it seems it just bogs down the system.

Also regarding Xslimmer, it says back up location is not writable. Any reason why?

            Re: Apple Mac Lovers

Just wanted to check in to this thread...

Been rocking my 15-inch white Macbook since summer of 06. I love it.

I had a battery issue early, but Apple just simply sent me a new battery. Since then, nothing much has gone wrong. Screen flickers every once in a while (not enough to be a problem)... that's basically it.

Of course, I bought the Macbook that had 512 mb of RAM... haha... old school. I upgraded last summer to two 1 GB sticks from www.crucial.com for just 40 or 50 bucks. They only run at 667 MHz, but it's plenty for me... and MAN has the improvement been felt. So much faster at opening programs and so much easier to run multiple apps.

I still run OS 10.4... no problems and no need to upgrade for my uses.

The take on Apple/Mac from someone who isn't into computers much:

I love Apple's simple and smart design. Everything is where you would think it would be and is very easy to access. The simple little programs they have (Spotlight, iCal, etc.) just make life so much easier. I know the phrase is used so often and people make fun of it, but they really are "user friendly" to the Nth degree. Everything is where I need it and there are plenty of customization options. I love it.

And not having to deal with viruses and such is GREAT.

Also, I recently picked up a second screen to use when I'm at school (since I just chill with it on my bed at home... no desk).

            17-inch LCD 1440 x 900

$129.99 on bestbuy.com, but I ran in to a sale in the store and got it for $49.99 in the store... terrific deal!

I jumped on www.monoprice.com and picked up the cable to go from mini-DVI to VGA for seven bucks. Also got the cable to go from Xbox 360 to VGA for 7 bucks (Microsofts version sells for 40).

Monoprice.com is sick. Reviews basically say the quality is a little off, but the prices are just outrageously good. I spent 20 bucks (including shipping) on cables and adapters that should have cost over 60 bucks. I sacrafice some quality (in picture and physical design), but DAMN!

Never mind, I just created my own folder. I suppose that is what I had to do from the beginning.

I have never ran anything for security and never had a problem. I read the same thing about it bogging down everything.

When it's plugged in I have the Optimization set to "Normal".

When it's running on the battery I have it set to "Better Battery Life".

                            Battery:
                            computer sleep after 5 min
                            display sleep after 1 min

                            Power adapter:
                            computer sleep after 15 min
                            display sleep after 10 min

                            both:
put hard disk(s) to sleep when possible
automatically reduce display brightness before sleep

My main concern is keeping my battery good for as long as I can.

When you guys are using your machine at home, do you always keep it plugged in? If so Will this overkill the battery, is there a sensor in the macbook to communicate when plugged in so the battery doesn't use power at all.

Also when would you recommend killing the battery until the book turns off, so you can get the battery fully charged again?

Sorry guys like I said I wanna keep my battery running strong for as long as possible, due to us not being able to change it on our own.

One more thing, did any of you get apple care? I didn't right now because I'm cover for then year. I know apple gives you that while year to decide to buy the apple care.
