all i have is an iBrick....

ive been on the phone with ATT all morning. I cant believe some of these idiots they have fielding calls about this.

I spoke with 6 different service reps for 2 hours, and was finally told to wait 4 hours and if nothing happens to call back.

At this point, that is simply unacceptable

Is it just number portability problems at this point or some other issue?

              Re: iPhone on June 29.

Are you having trouble activating it? If so it could be because of this:
iPhone not supported under 64-bit Windows XP or Vista -- oops

Struggling with your new iPhone on a 64-bit Windows Vista or XP system? Take solice, you're not alone. The error message, "The software required for iPhone is not installed. Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes, then install iTunes again." is Apple's magical way of telling you that iTunes is not supported on 64-bit flavors of Microsoft's operating systems. Yeah, we agree, they should have listed it on the iPhone specs page under Windows System Requirements. Unfortunately for those of you new to Apple software, it's buried in support article 301301 which states, "iTunes is currently not supported in Windows XP Professional x64 Edition or any 64-bit edition of Windows Vista." Now you know.

They've only had 6 freaking months to be ready for this.

Looks like iPhone holds up well in PC World's durability test. Couldn't scratch the screen.

Hopefully the poor AT&T service will allow another carrier (verizon) to step in when iPhone ver2 comes out.

With every hour that goes by, im getting more and more frustrated...

I think I have spoken to 15 reps today, and I am no where closer to getting this number ported.

The iTunes activation process was obviously a bad decision.

Mine took minutes. I think you are getting screwed if you ported your number over. I really think that other phone companies are taking their sweet time on this just to hurt ATT.

Here's what I posted at DSP.

hought I would post some impressions for everyone.

I'm going to do this backwards and address the problems first.

EDGE - Isn't slow all the time but really depends on the website. Just testing this out on a few sites. First I went to soccernet.com, a site I thought would take a long time. The stupid espn.go thing didn't help. It took less than a minute to load and was really quick. I then went to CNN is it was very slow. Could have been the part of the house that always had bad reception.

I think ATT have done something to the EDGE network. It's not instant but it's acceptable.

Keyboard - This will take a bit of time to get used to. Everyone will touch the buttons different. I was using the tip of my finger to press the buttons. For best results you have to aim at the middle of the key, some what like pressing down on the 360 sticks with the middle part of your thumb. Right now, I feel I can with two thumbs pretty quickly. Much faster than typing on a blackberry. (Though that's just me.)

                              Other stuff
Copying, pasting and test highlighting needs to be added. I don't know how they will do it in the context of the the controls but typing and email and wanting to delete a word, sentence, paragraph is a pain.

The sensor for rotating the screen can sometimes be activeted when the iphone is just leaning one way or the other.

Now for the stuff that is good. I'm not going to go over what everbody has read by now.

Quality - I think time will tell if there are problems with it, but the device just feels very well built. That's entirely subjective but apple has made a sleek looking device that feels great in the hand.

Simplicity - If there's one thing a regular cell phone does better it's opening the phone and dailing. To dial an entire number you have to 2-3 clicks away from that. But how many times do you dial your friends by remember their number. Other than that, the thing is just simple to use like any other apple/mac product.

Only time will tell. Can they upgrade the iPhone to address some of the software grumbles. Like having the keyboard switch to portrait view in emails not just browsing. Knowing apple they probably will knock out some really killer ideas through a software update.

I think most of the complaints outside of edge are things that people think are important because they should have this option or feature but the buyer never uses these features.

Like I said, the phone is a neat device, probably not 600 dollars neat but it's well built and does what everyone expects. Where you get your monies worth, at least in my opinion is Apple. I have a feeling that Jobs is not going to let ATT get lazy with this thing.

Lastly some girl in line (who was there for her BF) asked me why I wanted this thing. Here's what this device does that's important for me

                              Phone - everyone uses this
iPod - I got tired of having to carry a phone and a mp3/Ipod around.
Email - no problem, works just like a BB/Treo.
Browser - if you need to do serious work on the iPhone are you going to be outside or at a computer with broadband.

It just simplifies a lot of things for me. Now it's up to the network not to let the iPhone down.

                              ----
and in response to someone asking about edge.

It would be fantastic while I was on a road trip to surf the net. That's ideal. It's not there yet. It would be ideal while your are at the mall or something to check prices or whatever you need to do while you aren't at home.

I would suspect given the chance that using the internet to surf on a 2-3 inch screen is not something many people want to do in extended periods. You do it to kill time at coffee houses, airports, etc. In this instances wi-fi might be available.

At other times when you need to surf, it's probably to get one peice of information and move on. In those cases even EDGE fits the bill. Is it ideal no, will it suffice yes.

I would rather have about 24 hours of battery life than have 5 minutes of surfing on 3G to leave me with 4 hours of battery life. 3G will get there and some will ATTs 3G reach.

Look it's not that bad. It's not super fantastic but I've only used broadband for the past few years so ya this isn't fast.

For non-business use, it works just fine. Now wi-fi is downright sublime.
