But you realize that by June, there'll be a new iPhone, so you can just be one of the early adopters of that one. Especially since so many people are gonna rush out and get this one right away. The iPhone outright price is absolutely ridiculous.

I just can't wait that long, lol. I've been waiting for an iPhone since they came out. I'm gonna ask around and see if anyone has an upgrade they wouldn't mind sharing.

They are not. With Verizon you cannot use phone and data at the same time

CDMA and EDGE handsets can't (without wifi). I'll likely test it myself anyway.

So yeah, safe to say I am staying with AT&T and their unlimited data package that I have.

I listen to talk radio all day at work and sometimes in the car as well, pandora etc... no wifi except for at home.

I would say around 30 hours a week streaming.

I think, at least with the iPhone, that you can find the estimated total cost to build the device... and there is a large gross margin for them.

At least not taking into account marketing, r&d, etc.

IIRC it was around $190 for a 16GB... and that's on sale for what? $499 without a contract? $599?

lol, that's like saying video games have a really high gross margin because, disregarding development, the discs cost like 79 cents to make and are selling for $60.

Apple spends a ridiculous amount of money on marketing and R&D.

Not quite exactly the same. It's a closer analogy to a PS3. Video games are software and we are talking about hardware with a multi-purpose OS at this point.

You can run apps you just can't get data. Just like as if you put your iPhone with AT&T on Edge.

I know it's a different phone, but I have the Palm Pre Plus and have answered calls while my Facebook/Twitter/other apps are running, so I don't see why it would be an issue.

Well yeah, but I just don't think you can disregard marketing and R&D costs when trying to determine if something is overpriced when the company making the product spends gobs of money in these two areas.

Link? Because everywhere Ive read has said they havent released data plan pricing.

Actually what was said is that on CDMA and EDGE phones you can't use data and talk at the same time. For example, look up something on the web while talking. Running apps and talking on the phone is something entirely different.

Gotcha, thanks for the clarification. That's still a big downfall to me (as touched upon by the following article I will post).

Over at TUAW, Mel Martin posted why he won't be switching, and I tend to agree with him:

• Big Fee to drop my AT&T plan. Way too much. $325 for those who purchased after June 1, 2010, and $10 off of that for every month of completed contract.
• Coverage. We all know that AT&T coverage is generally worse than Verizon, but AT&T ponied up and let me have a MicroCell device for free. It solves the 'no coverage at home' problem, and after some initial growing pains it works well
• Competition is good. I expect AT&T to step up and compete, not because they want to, but because they have to. Maybe there will be a reinstatement of unlimited data plans. Maybe FaceTime will finally work on 3G.
• Simultaneous voice and data are huge. I often fire off an email or web link when I'm on the phone. Going to Verizon means I kiss all that goodbye.
• Speed. At least here in Arizona, I get really fast data on the iPhone. Yes, the Verizon voice network is more reliable, but in local side by side tests on the data side, my AT&T phone really is faster than a Verizon smartphone.
• New iPhones. There will likely be a new iPhone this summer. I expect it will be a lot easier to talk AT&T into an upgrade than Verizon.
