Getting an iPhone 4S on Saturday!! Anyone have recommendations on screen protectors? I'm reading mixed reviews on the invisibleshield HD, SGP, and Powersupport.

I had a cheap one from ebay for my ipod touch and I don't like the feel of it at all, so I wanna try the brand names.

I have an Zagg Invisible Shield. It's been on my 4S since October and is still in great condition. You can't even tell that I have one on.

Apple's maps are going to have to come a LONG way to match what Google has built over the years. Seems like a waste of effort to me.

Positioning your company to not rely on a third party that is directly competing with your largest source of income is what you would consider a waste of effort?

It actually looks just as useful and most people will end up just using it because of the turn by turn. Even if Google releases a stand-alone maps app (which should be a no-brainer) people will still have to use Apple's Maps for navigation.

I guess Apple's next step should be to pour significant resources into creating a new search engine?

I'd concentrate my efforts on an area that hasn't already been (more or less) mastered and will help me sell more phones. Burning through resources just to create a mapping functionality that may one day be as functional as Google Maps isn't going to sell any phones.

What was holding back Google Maps on iPhone from having turn-by-turn? Google trying to give their own phones an advantage?

That example doesn't make sense. There are a number of providers for you to use and to search your phone Apple uses its own algorithms. This is a very important part of a PHONE today - giving you the ability to navigate and have turn-by-turn directions there. It was a selling point and why Android pushed it and google never brought it over to iOS. Yes, GOOGLE never included it as far as anyone knows. Even if there was a scenario that Apple didn't want to allow Google to incorporate it, Google could have put out an app. Just like they have an app for searching (yes, *gasp* searching), gmail, earth, shopping, catalogs, plus, etc. They did not.

I don't agree with your line of thinking either. It's why Microsoft fell so far behind in the marketplace. I guess they shouldn't care about tablet devices and the such because it has "already been mastered?" Thankfully they don't agree and are actively pursuing an Airplay competitor, tablet OS competitors, etc.

So I got my hands on the beta, loving it...I love the new and improved Siri. It works great...Even works good with apps..Such as "Open Facebook"

There's really very little money to be gained when you are forced to play catch-up. Tablets are far from mastered, and that area is still in its infancy, whereas maps... what is the next step beyond driving a car around every street in the world and taking 360 degree photographs that has already been done?

Anyone that has picked up the beta of IOS6 there has been a tethered jailbreak released for it. It is a developer jailbreak still pretty buggy Cydia does not work yet. The promising thing is that the jailbreak was done pretty quickly the bad news is that hacker Muscle Nerd said that with it being so buggy it will probably take a while before they can get any kind of stable jailbreak. Remember how long it took for a jailbreak for the 4S and iPad 2 and how long it took for one on 5.1.1, with this only being a beta of ios 6 any vulnerabilities found will be surely gone when the public release hits. So if you are a person like me that can't go without your jailbroken device don't be in a big hurry to upgrade to ios 6 when it hits even though it looks like it will be the best firmware release to date.

So you thinking paying what i'm sure are massive licensing fees to Google for their maps is better than Apple dumping them and using their own resources. Look, I can't stand Apple, but I can't knock them for this move. Of course it's not as good as Google Maps, but it's a start. Google just announced their 3D upgrade along with making Maps available offline. That is huge.

I doubt there will be a Google Maps in the app store. If there is, i'll be surprised.

Geez you sound like the guys here when they complain about resources being used for mascot games instead of franchise mode...

Look, if you haven't noticed, Apple is slowly moving towards providing their users with a complete service so you don't need Google. Following your logic, they would have never jumped into the music business, the email business, etc. etc. How can you make these claims of missing innovation about Apple of all companies? Really? The maps application is a start. Just like Siri was. Just like iTunes Match was. Just like the iPhone OS was when it couldn't cut and paste. Etc., etc.

Your logic just doesn't make sense to me. Maybe I'm alone. Either way, this is where we are. Unlike some other areas of iOS, if you don't like the maps application you can always use something else.

Not seeing how that follows at all.

Anyway, I think my original point has been morphed into something way bigger than it was intended to. I get now that it's in Apple's best interest to develop their own mapping. It's just too bad that they had to use up so many resources on maps rather than something more... underdeveloped.

Turn-by-turn will be nice to have. I've always just stuck with the standard Google Maps on my iPhone, never tried any of the other mapping apps.
