There's room for both. Pandora is much better as a radio app, IMO. Spotify is good for when you know exactly what you want to listen to.

we are remodeling my house with a lot of help. dad, uncle, father in law, brother, friends, etc. so trying to find a good mix of music to play all day for everyone.
started with the "rock" station on Spotify - while i like it, there is too much hard stuff mixed in there for the older guys and there doesn't seem to be a "classic rock" station on Spotify.
switched to "classic rock" on Pandora and worked out a lot better.
I'm 40 years old, so I may have a slightly different slant on this - just because of my adult-world schedule. But here are the apps that I find very helpful:
maps: google maps, NearMe
weather: the weather channel, local tv weather (as a Floridian - I dodge potential hurricane warnings for 6 months)
news: flipboard, local tv news channels
Bank of America - LOVE being able to deposit my check with it!
My AT&T - to track our family data plan usage (esp. my 13 year old son!!)
youtube, twitter, facebook, facebook messenger, facebook camera
photography: instagram, instaframe free, instaEditor, Pic Stitch, BeFunky
sports: espn SportsCenter (only for scores - I have directv - can't use their main app), NBA Game Time (works with my directv subscription so I can watch the games on my phone), yahoo fantasy sports apps, Big Ten To Go (LOVE it!!), Team Stream, ESPN College Football, MLB.com At Bat
shopping: starbucks (probably my favorite app!), Red Laser, Wallet, SunPass (for local Florida tolls - track my account), Publix (Florida grocer), Target, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, GameStop, Walgreens, CVS, BasBuddy (finds gas stations near you with prices included!)
TV: DirecTv (both apps), IMDB
iHeartRadio
97.1 The Fan (Columbus, OH sports radio - since I've moved to Florida from Columbus - love hearing the interviews)
Google Chrome, Google Drive (synched with my computers - so I can review my documents that I want to be mobile)
Barnes & Noble, Nook
Amazon.com
eBay
PayPal
I'm pretty much set with these - I don't play games on my phone, and these have been very helpful for me and thought I'd share them as well.
One super powerful part of spotify radio is you can make a playlist and base it off that, plus the up and down feature configures it well. Spotify has completely replaced pandora for me.

Yeah, like I said, Spotify is great for when you know what you want to listen to. It's more of a replacement for iTunes syncing your music than it is for Pandora.
Pandora is still hands-down better from a music discovery standpoint.
Comparing a Pandora station to a Spotify station, for the same artist, you'll get much better variety from the former than you will from the latter.
