The only time I've found DP's show entertaining was one time (I don't know if it was done more than once) when he had Reggie and Mark on, and they just riffed on different things, outside of basketball... It made for very good radio. I found myself saying, "Forget Patrick, just let these two take over his show"...

Cowherd is nothing more than a shock jock, who says stuff just to get people riled up... His schtick is to prod a large fanbase, get 'em pissed off to the point where they'll either call in or e-mail him to tell him how pissed off they are... What they don't realize is, they're keeping him employed by doing that... The worst thing for a radio person is to be IRRELEVANT; you've gotta move the meter one way or another... If everyone hates you, that's cool, and if everyone loves you, that's cool too... I've heard Cowherd say on more than one occasion that he likes hate mail more than fan mail, because the hate mail means you CARE more. If all the people who say they hate him would just simply stop listening, he'd be off the air in a year. I read in a thread on InsideCarolina, that Colin had made a statement how dook is better at everything, after he had Shane Battier on... A bunch of my Tar Heel brethren were all up in arms about it, too, while it was blatantly obvious what he was trying to do... Suck up to dook, get the UNC fans all pissed off, so they'll call/e-mail the show.... It was so transparent it was funny.

I prefer Sporting News Radio, you get more nuts and bolts sports talk there... And on ESPN, their "GameNight" show is pretty cool, and the weekend lineup is decent as well... It's just the weekday stuff that blows.

        Re: Dan Patrick Leaves ESPN

Dan "Pause" Patrick always seemed to have an arrogance and chip on his shoulder because he was at ESPN before it was truly enormous. Once guys like Kilborn and Olberman left DP seemed to get much more crass. Like he was owed something or was better than others who came aboard after ESPN changed into a pop culture crapfest. I never cared for his radio show either.

However, the one time I met DP at the ESPN company picnic he was a gentlemen. The problem is that ESPN and sports journalism has turned into a market where people will do whatever to get attention. I have several friends who work at ESPN, one is a main researcher for Cold Pizza (or whatever it's called now) and he said Skip Bayless is the quietest and most courteous person he's ever met when the camera isn't rolling. It's like wrestling, they're just stage gimmicks and schticks. Ratings are the most important things and like they say, "Bad press is better than no press."

I wish DP the best of luck in the future.

I didn't like both shows when I first started to listen but I eventually really enjoyed the programs. The Jim Rome show is a very inside type of show. New listeners aren't going to get a lot of the jokes or the clone crackbacks. Rome always has me in stitches when he starts ripping on soccer.

I like Cowherd because he speaks the truth. I agree with almost all of his opinions even if some are unpopular with the general public. It's must listen radio/podcasts when Cowherd goes off on wrestling fans. He calls them booger eaters and basically a bunch of losers. It's much funnier than what I just typed.

Both shows are also enjoyable when they go off-topic.
I can listen to Rome, but sometimes he gets a little to "RED-IC-UL-OUS".

Sometime Cowherd brings ups some good opposing sides to topics, but he tries to hard to be controversial. IMO.

I think you mixed up the references there. Hehe. Isn't Cowherd the one who tried to make a comedy schtick out of "RED-IC-UL-OUS"? Either way....it's pretty stupid. I don't think "RED-IC-UL-OUS" is hip enough for Jimbo.

I loved the radio lineup of Mike and Mike, Cowherd, and Patrick... it made me very sad to hear this on the radio today

At least the Herd is still around... I love that guy.

I didn't really like his show that much, but if there's any positive it's that I don't have to hear that moron Keith Olbermann on my radio anymore.

Not a huge DP fan, but he's good w/ KO. I also like the fact that he asks the tough questions. Just today he stuck it to the MLB Commish about Bonds and if he's showing up.

Plus, DP is a guest on his own show. Seems like he's on there once maybe twice a week.

                    Re: Dan Patrick Leaves ESPN

I dont listen to ESPN radio. Start my day off with local hacks from 7 till 11, then its Rome till 2, then AirAmerica from 2 till around 4.

I gave the 2 Mikes a listen, and couldnt stand 'em, never went back. While Rome was off local airwaves temporarily around 5 years ago, I listened to Patrick and he bored me out of my mind.

He has a very smug, "listen to how intelligent my questions, and how witty my remarks are" kind of vibe. Just a few weeks ago I d'loaded some of his podcast just for something to listen to...still put me to sleep, I deleted 'em that night.

I honestly believe that the hosts of ESPN Radio get their ratings from the ESPN name itself. Take Mike and Mike, and Patrick, take away the networks pull and influence, and you've got two shows that really aren't very good.

As for Rome, I love his humor, I love the "clone on clone" violence, but I dont care for his interviews, nor many sports interviews in general, I can give the cliche answer before the athelete/coach does.

                    just my 2 cents.

It works better if you spell it right. I'll never get what is so hard about the word "ridicule".

                        Anyway.....

Rome can't win either way. The "clones" and "have a take, don't suck" schtick have been his thing for a long, long time since his nights on XTRA Sports 690 back in the early-to-mid 90's.

If he makes it big coining those phrases and becomes more like Dan Patrick then he'll be called a sell out by his long-time fans. If he stays like he has been his entire career then he'll inevitably find "haters".

At least he's stayed true to himself the past 15 years.

Yup and his interviews are terrible. I remember him talking to Peyton and Eli and he kept talking about how Tom Brady was underrated and was asking them why Peyton gets talked about when Brady has won more and all this other stuff. And when he was talking to Joe Horn about the cell phone thing he never let him speak.

This man spits truth... It's ESPN forcing them down the public's throat... People see the ESPN brand, and figure that it must be the end-all, be-all of sports talk. Look at Colin Cowherd, ESPN's new toy... They had him doing that wall-to-wall coverage of the UNC-dook game, and one of the big college football games, marketing the heck out of him... A way to get the casual fan to tune in; "Oh, isn't that the guy who was all over the ESPN coverage the other day? Let me listen to him..." If it wasn't for the powerful ESPN brand, none of these dudes could hold the jock of the best local hack...

I would challenge anyone to listen to Mike and Mike one morning, then try out the Morning Sports Page out of Charlotte, on WFNZ.com, and tell me Jim and Gary and co. aren't way more entertaining than Golic and the little girl.

UGH, Cowherd is just awful, and Patrick wasn't much better. How about putting a guy on with a somewhat normal personality and great sports knowledge across all major sports? Is that so hard to ask for?

For great sports talk, tune into the internet feed of WFAN in NYC. That was the first sports talk station in the country, and it is still the best, IMO.

I listen to the morning show here in Atlanta, on 680 The Fan. They're affiliated with ESPN Radio for the most part. They play The Herd, and Dan Patrick. Last week the morning show took the whole week off, and in its place was Mike and Mike. That show is horrible, couldn't stand them for more than 15 minutes that Monday.

Colin Cowherd gets on my nerves repeating himself over, and over, and over. I can tolerate Dan Patricks show more than anyone else on ESPN Radio. When it boils down to it, I'll take the local show, be it the morning show with Rude and Perry, or the afternoon show with Buck and Kincade. Local, in my opinion, is better..hands down.
