So I took my iPod to a friend's house, restored it just fine, and added a few songs.

I get back home, plug in the iPod, and my computer isn't recognizing it again. What's the issue here? It's not the USB cord or iPod itself because both worked just fine on my friend's computer.

Ugh, this is so ****ing annoying. This wasn't a problem a couple weeks ago.

EDIT: I don't know how I forgot about this, but I forgot to mention that yesterday when I first plugged my iPod into my computer and it wouldn't be recognized, some notification popped up saying something. I can't remember what exactly, but it said if I ran whatever it was, I could run the risk of it affecting the system. I have no idea what it was or how to recreate it, but I have a feeling that could be the issue.

try a system restore on the computer to maybe a week ago and see if that helps

Tried that and now I'm in an even worse spot. The system restore wouldn't work. Every time it would say it was incomplete after the computer restarted. But the real problem is somehow iTunes is missing and when I try to uninstall it using Add/Remove Programs from the control panel (using Windows XP BTW) or run the iTunessetup.exe it gives me this error from Windows Installer saying...

"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.

Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'iTunes.msi' in the box below."

I just spent the last 4-5 hours trying to fix this, but couldn't. At this point I'm really just considering saying **** it and wiping my computer clean.

I deed it!

Finally fixed my iPod not being recognized and was able to remove and reinstall iTunes as well. I feel like such an idiot, but I'm just glad it's done with. I kind of needed to start fresh with my iPod anyways since I had too many songs I didn't listen to much on their and just kept them for the sake of keeping them.

BTW in case anyone has this happen to them, what I had to do to fix the iPod not being recognized was go into the device manager, plug in my iPod, right click it when it comes up in devices, go to properties, and reinstall the driver. I guess somehow it uninstalled when I first came across the problem.

Also, the iTunes fix was easy as well. I downloaded a Windows Installer Clean Up program and was able to remove iTunes and the other Apple programs that way.

Glad you got it. Those problems are usually your personal machine and they're tough to pinpoint the issue.

While they rarely happen, those issues are 5x worse on a Mac when they do. Much more difficult to figure out.

Just curious, why is that? Most things seem a hell of a lot easier on a Mac.

Most issues with iTunes on a windows PC are fixed by a reinstall because of how Apple's developers package the install executable. There is nothing similar on a Mac so you have to deal with files being fragmented in places that one must need to know where to look to fix/address.

I know it seems backwards and it is. It's actually being remedied immensely by the App Store. If you have any experience with Linux it's basically a privately owned repository. Somewhat similar to add/remove programs on Windows. Not exact, just similar in theory.

Just curious if there is a way to fix a shortage in my iPod?

I'm having issues where whenever I plug in my headphones into my iPod, I'm only getting sound in one side while not getting any sound in the other. I've tried switching headphones and using others and still having the same problem.

Are there places where I can actually take this to and have them look/repair it while I'm there or will I have to send this in? I really don't want to buy another one because this seems like something that can easily be fixed.

I have a similar problem where the audio gets distorted if the headphones are plugged in a certain way. I was looking in to getting one of these http://www.amazon.com/SRS-Labs-iWOW-...pr_product_top because i really dont want to buy a new ipod yet and repairing it isnt an option for me

Did you try blowing in it? Yourself or with compressed air? I'd check iFixit, too.

I had this problem a couple years back with my first Touch. I had a bad habit of always leaving my headphones wrapped around the iPod with them still plugged in and apparently that screwed with the headphone jack or something inside of there.

I ended up taking it to the Apple store and was able to get it fixed for free since it was still under warranty. I think if it isn't under warranty it costs close to $100.

Yeah, I remember there are sites out there that'll give you walkthroughs on how to fix various items. I was looking at the screen for my 1g iPod Touch (it's scratched like crazy), I'd just have to buy the screen and tools and it's not much. Just haven't used it enough to justify fixing it yet.
