Questions... What is this new Ipod Touch thing? Do you have to pay for a service once you buy it? Can it be used as a PDA?

I don't think it's like a PDA...It is basically a iPhone but without the phone, camera, etc. It has WiFi so you can connect to the internet (only if there's a network where you're at), a web browser, and stores your music/videos.

Pared, I think I might get a iPod Touch too...waiting a while to decide, but I don't know if I really need the iPhone for everything.

Well it releases on Sept. 28th. As soon as I read they're in stores I'm going to pick one up. Too nice to pass up. I want the iPhone but $70/month for a cellular plan is a bit high for me. Plus, my job is completely wireless.... so it'll be nice having it around... although my PDA's have been wireless and with me since '00... and I don't get PDA functions out of this.

Want a new phone and it would be nice to have a phone and my music all in one, but I don't know...

The most space you're going to have in an iPhone right now is 8 GB. How much music do you have?

Like I said, it's a nice all in one solution, especially at the price point of $400. A lot more attractive than $600. But you're going to have to make a sacrifice somehow.

Also, what if you use your iPod all day without charging? You can't do that with the iPhone. Until you know what exactly you're going to do with it, then you can't make a decision.

FWIW, the iPhone is a terrible corporate solution. Company's worst nightmare. But if you just want it to have casually I think you'd be pleased. It can hold a good amount of music but once you start throwing videos on there space quickly becomes a premium.

Not exactly true. On days when I forget to bring my iPod to work, I listen to my iPhone all day long and then I'll talk on it and use the internet, etc the rest of the evening and at night when I plug it up, it still has probably 25-35% juice left. THere have only been maybe 2-3 days since I've had it when I've used it enough to get the 'you need to charge the battery' warning.

well said Pared. The monthly cost is too much for me, and I've realized I don't want the iPhone specifically, i just want the cool features. I think the 16 gb iPod touch would be perfect for me. I'm running off a 4gb iPod Nano right now, have more music than that but not 80 gb. I need the touch aspect though. That's just too cool to skip, I think if I got the classic I'd feel I had "settled" for the uglier girl at the bar.

Then I guess I should add a YMMV sticker.

My co-worker plays his all during his little over 1 hour commute to and from work, not to mention all day when at work. On days he forgets to bring his charger (he's too cheap to shell out for another one but he says it's because he paid $600 for the phone) if he talks enough throughout the day his battery doesn't last him all the way home.

But like I wrote, he's using the thing pretty heavily. He loves it.

The basic plan is $60 with unlimited data. After taxes that's over $70. You only get 200 text messages included. You can add more, however.

Hell if I know. Apparently that's the cheapest plan available for my phone for the services I want. I text like crazy... I think in 2 days I sent like... 460 or something so having unlimited text is a must for me.

Yeah I def need unlimted text messeging. As far as minutes, I can go the cheapest. I have 450 day time and 5000 nights and weekends. I never even come close to going over. I have over 6K in rollover minutes.

I pay $65.00 a month...

out of my 450 anytime I used 61 (a lot of people I talk to have cingular so the calls are free)

Nights/Weekend minutes I have only used 324 of 5000

I have sent 1064 text messages.

I have 6,201 rollerover minutes, 680 wille expire.

this cycle ends on the 19th of the month.

Isn't AT&T/Cingular now one and the same?

If you get the iPhone you will need to find SMS texting workarounds... like using websites to send text messages. It's a bit of a pain.

You can also send emails to phones as text messages.... but not as simple as just texting to a phone number.
