Who cares who gets what? You pay for cell phone service; You own a cell phone.

iPod users, on the other hand, own an iPod. They already charged for the applications. Now, they're going to charge again.

They're going to charge you... to get access to the App Store, so you can buy applications.

Yes. That makes sense.

I just don't understand it...I mean Microsoft and Sony give us updates to the dashboard (and Sony is bringing along Home), all for free. On products that aren't "subscription" (both systems). Even the old Zunes got the new software for free when Microsoft released it. I don't know why other companies can support things for free (and offer new features/programs) but Apple has to charge us just because they know a lot of people will bend over and take it without question.

It's BS, that's what it is. You have people who are going to try and justify all they can but it's a bunch of crock.

I'll show them... I'm getting rid of this damn thing and buying the new iPhone come June.

the only way I can see it justified:

iPhone users are essentially paying for the upgrades, that just comes in the form of the monthly check ATT sends to Apple for each iPhone on contract.

So why should iPhone pay for the development costs of the SDK and the software, and the iPod user just piggy back and get it for free?

Thats really the only way I can rationalize it

Apple gets that money even if they do nothing...

By that logic we should pay for every Sony XMB update, etc. ATT isn't paying for updates, they're paying to suck on Apple's teat and get all these customers. It's not the iPod customer's fault that ATT is completely stupid and shoveling all this money at Apple...

It's not like the iPhone people are paying EXTRA money, they'd be paying this no matter what. Just seems weird when nearly every other type of thing has free upgrades. I don't really care, I'm not going to pay for that stuff, I can just get things for free as it is, but just in general it's a trend I don't like.

Apple neutered the Touch on purpose, then gave us the same stuff they had all ready had (and could have bundled in) but didn't...just strikes as money grubbing to me, leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I don't blame Apple one bit, it's well within their right to get as much money out of us as they can. It just makes me like them less and less when stuff like this happens.

They would have totally farked over early adopters with glee with the original iPhone price drops, but people bitched and they gave them the 100 bucks. They weren't going to do that UNLESS people complained...kinda like "hey, let's float this and see if we can get away with it".

It's just business, but I don't have to like it or be blindly in support of everything they do.

my 2nd gen ipod shuffle has been fine until now. I recently reinstalled windows, and wanted to change songs on my ipod. I have itunes 7 and my shuffle wont work. It says it syncs, but when I send music to it, itunes locks up and i have to shut it down.

It also tells me that an update is available for my ipod, but when I tell it to do so, itunes lags and eventually pops up saying that "An unknown error has occurred error 1417". Okay, found apple's advice here, which didn't help me at all.

Well I said fine and downloaded the apple restore program to wipe it back to factory settings, and it still does it.

wtf is the problem with this piece of ****? I've reinstalled itunes, reset the ipod, and it still wont let me upgrade the ipod or move music over to it anymore. Since I wiped it, I can't even listen to what I did have on it in the first place.

I'm tempted to go back to the iPod Classic 80gb due to battery life over the Zune 80 and the all so nice new Digital Copy feature which doesn't work on any other MP3 player than the damn iPod.

Anybody know of good websites that have reliable iPod news? I'm considering getting a Nano for the gym (I already have a video iPod but would like something smaller for the gym) but don't want to have to trim my music down to 8GB. It would be great if they had a 16GB version. So, I don't want to buy the 8GB now and then in a few weeks or a month they come out with a 16GB version.

Engadget.com is usually a great place to keep up with Apple news.

Yesterday I decided to go back to the iPod Classic 80gb after I originally had it when it first released, but the battery FW issue really aggravated me to the point where I sold it and bought the Zune 80. While the Zune 80 was nice in some areas, it really lacked some features that I liked on the iPod, so I'm back.

My question is that I ripped all my songs in WMA format when I had the Zune. I dragged all my songs into iTunes last night so it can place them into the iTunes software and it started converting whichever songs weren't in the AAC format from WMA. When I woke up this morning, my PC was still converting about another 1,000 songs before I left for work. When I re-sync the iPod to my PC/iTunes will all those converted songs finally be transfered to the iPod? Before they appeared in iTunes, but had the exclamation mark next to them.

Yes, they'll be there. Just let it do its thing. Shouldn't see any change in audio quality either.
