Well at least South Park isn't affected. Doesn't really matter though since they only have 2 episodes left this season anyway.

I don't know what I'll do without 24, The Office, and House though.

why dont others go the south park un unionized route?

that seems to be the logical choice as theyll be getting tons more viewers with new content.

other shows need to jump on it and take advantage

Because they'll get their asses kicked by the networks money wise...I'm sure South Park takes care of its people, but most shows and networks would just rape the writers and leave them curled in the gutter crying.

This is really gonna kill me. During the week, I work 3PM-11PM, and I DVR all of my shows, and really look forward to catching them as soon as I get home. Oh well, atleast most shows will be new until about December when my child is due, so I wouldn't have had as much time anyways.

Either way, let's hope they work this out. I'll die without House, Prison Break, Smallville, and Supernatural.

I don't know if this was mentioned so i'll go ahead and do it now:

I was watching the PBS News Hour (great broadcast btw) and they were talking about the strike. I have a bad feeling this is going to be a long and drawn out strike. The guest who works for Advertising Age was saying this strike has issues deeply rooted in the last strike in 1988 where writers basically made one of the worst deals ever by doing an 80/20 split on VHS sales.

Basically that meant 80% of VHS profits went to the studios for their own purposes and the writers only got a measly 20% in return. As we all know VHS was a goldmine for the entertainment industry and so the writers feel burned over that.

The huge issue this time around is digital media. The writers want a bigger stake in digital download profits etc etc etc. The studios however, don't even really have a business model for the coming digital age. In fact, even if you take away the hardware (plastic covers, DVDs etc etc) the production costs and such are still going to be very costly and it'll be hard to make back the money spent. Studios don't even know what to charge for the digital services etc etc. So the writers are asking for a fair shake when it comes to this but in return the studios and networks don't even know how to go about exploiting it so no one even knows what kind of profits are reasonable to project 5-10 years ahead.

The '88 strike lasted 22 weeks. I have a feeling this strike could be twice as long.

Yeah, it's not that bad...I'm very interested more in the nitty gritty, it's kinda cool to learn why they're actually striking and understand the issues...

I can read books or do other things, no big deal

south park has been around since 97 or so. It's a cornerstone of comedy central, and was kind of a low budget show to begin with. I'm sure they are all well off anyways, so it's not like they have to go unionized to keep their jobs.

As for this article, The Shield not being produced by the creator kind of sucks bad though too. I'd hope they just held off and let him do it. It's just TV, and people have waited longer for a sopranos season. I'd rather see a proper ending to that series than a rushed production without the creator's guidance.

TV Guide notes that the network will make sure they hold on to a new episode of House to air after the Super Bowl, as planned, even if most of their scripted series that debuted in the fall have run out of new episodes by then.

Hey, libraries might even see a few more patrons because of this strike. Imagine that.

It will give me a chance to watch some shows that I never watched. BBC should strike a deal with a network and bring some of their good shows to the US.

As far as the strike, it is going to have to last a while for the networks to give in. They will first have to run out of episodes and then they will start hurting when the ads go down in price.
