That would be why I listen to Progressive Metal.

The singers tend to have amazing voices, the musicianship is TOP notch, and the cheesy overtones of Power Metal aren't there.

One of my favorite Prog Metal bands is Evergrey. I friggin love those guys!

As long as you don't like Dragonfarce, you're still OK in my book.

DJ Jazzy Jeff's is solid... Cunninlynguists' "Dirty Acres" is marvelous.

LOL, we've been calling them Dragonfarce too. It's a shame what they do in live performances. And I 100% agree about Evergrey. They are an amazing band. That lead singer killed on their version of Rising Force. A must listen for any Everygrey, prog, or powermetal fan.

...I have one more question for you. How in the hell do you get mindless from his lyrics? They are one of the few bands that gets radio play that ISN'T mindless. He, like Maynard, writes music that makes you think. And I don't get your 'aggressive' comment. They are NOT an aggressive band, that simply shows you have listened to their singles. VERY FEW of their songs have a lot of aggression. I also don't think Maynard, himself, would invite a band that makes mindless music to play the Tool cd release party, which is exactly what he did last year. Hurt played that party.

Yes, those bands are at the top of my list, except for LoG. I like them, but they are junior varsity as far as I'm concerned. Between the Buried and Me and Arsis are both worth mention, as is Necrophagist, who are very prog for a death metal band.

And when I said mindless, I was only referring to them musically, like that riff from about 0:55 to 1:05 in that second clip. That's like guitaring 101 right there. I'm open to simplicity, but they don't apply it in a way that engages me at all. I don't listen to lyricists, because lyrics do nothing for me. I'll listen to the singer as a melodic or rhythmic tool, but lyrics just don't get anywhere with me. They don't reach me emotionally, and I don't find them to be thought provoking 99% percent of the time. I know it sounds snooty, but I like real philosophy, and after going over some Baconian, Aristotlean or Socratean musings, it's hard to listen to some of the lyrics people put together and regard as thoughtful.

And as far as Tool goes, I think they are alright, but it's nothing special to me. Solid drummer, and Maynard picks some nice melodies within his limited range, but the guitar work is meh and their sound doesn't cover a very broad range for me. I listen to them, but not religiously. It's a realtively mellow departure if I'm looking for something that is "sort of" aggressive, but not truly intense. Maynard's opinion of a band holds zero weight with me at all whatsoever.

Can't say I've heard many albums this year worth even noting... but I still have Nelly Furtado's Loose in my rotation to this day.

See... That is where you and I differ. The lyrics have to be good for me to enjoy the music. I find amazing musicianship boring if the lyrics aren't up to snuff. I love some of DT's work, but I can't stand a lot of it. I don't view a singer as a tool, I view them as the band-leader. The lyrics are what carry emotional value to me. I don't listen to the melody they create as much as the soul and passion to their voice. I find most of the music you listen to to be 'mindless' due to that very fact; no soul and passion to the words. So that is obviously where we differ. =)

We are like exact opposites. I listen to the stuff you find mindless while listening to the stuff you like when I want a change of pace. You listen to the stuff I find mindless, and listen to what I like when you want a change of pace, haha.

I guess we shall agree to disagree on music and what is meaningful in it.

Well said, and it all sounds about right. If I could snap my fingers and turn everything into an instrumental, a lot of people would be upset. I even prefer a CD of Neptunes instrumentals over whatever rappers they have on top of it. For me, the passion is in the music, and the relationships of the notes. The abstract language of harmony connects us all universally, as explored and learn-ed by the Pythagorean school, and that fascinates me. I don't try to deem this or that with or without passion, because what we relate to is all based on personal life experience anyway.

With lead singers, it's just that most of them sound a little dim, lol.

I feel you. For me, it's Hip Hop and R&B, yet Justin Timberlake is tied with Nas as my favorite music artist.
