I really don't understand why anyone would spend more money on a laptop that has less features than other laptops. And you're not just spending a couple extra hundred dollars, it's almost double the price of a very good laptop but you're getting nothing for it other than the ability to put it in an envelope. I understand that there's a market for a more portable computer but taking out everything and charging double isn't anything revolutionary(which some people have called it, not you) or anything to cheer for.

It's going to push the industry to start minimizing the size of their devices.

Why do people pay more money on portable PC's like the OQO? That's right, you don't know about that device. Look it up on google.

Again, this is for professionals who just need to take their laptop with them everywhere they go. I have about 2 people ordering them in my office alone.

MGO, make sure you get the SSD memory!

The industry is already minimizing the size of their devices and I've seen somewhere else that this thing isn't that much thinner than the macbook pro. That OQO thing is extremely small so I would understand that not having features. The macbook air is the same size as a regular laptop but it's slightly thinner and has nothing in it. And Apple expects people to spend an extra thousand on the hard drive, and whatever else it costs to get extra things to make it play dvd's or have extra usb ports. You even have to have another computer to even install the software or you have to buy yet another extra add-on.

You argued heavily against the iPod. People bought it basically b/c it was "cool."

You argued heavily against the iPhone. They haven't done anything really innovative.

Why would this be any different? At least you're consistent.

One problem with you jmood... is that if a product doesn't meet your personal "requirements" it really isn't a big deal. That's not how business works.

I actually didn't argue against the Ipod and all I said about the Iphone was that it wasn't as revolutionary as people made it out to be and was a waste of money. Anyway, it's not just my personal requirements, there are many apple fans who don't understand that thing. This is supposed to be made for people who travel alot, which is something that I do regularly. I know that when I'm in an airport or on a plane I don't want to have to rely on the slow wireless networks or not have the ability to watch a movie while on I'm the plane without having to waste money renting it for 24 hours or buying something seperate that reads cd's and dvd's.

Well I'm a professional and I think the exclusion of an Ethernet port puts this device in a toy category. There are quite a few companies that do not allow production traffic over wifi.

As far as the iPhone goes people often miss at how good a phone it is. My previous "smartphone" often froze, even though I'd lock the keypad to avoid accidental calling it would interpret accidental keypresses as password attempts, hitting special keys was a pain, taking another incoming call and switching back and forth didn't work well, managing contact lists wasn't intuitive, and I could go on. So to me, the iPhone was not a waste of money. I'm not using this thing saying, "I hate this phone."

The Air... it just doesn't offer anything practical. Sure it'll be nice to have and to hold but it isn't pushing any envelopes really.

Good point on the Ethernet port exclusion. I can see where that would be a problem.

Although I'd gather the iPhone is in a similar predicament for professionals as well. The inability to access email securely in an Exchange environment seems to have been an issue with some. Same goes for Lotus notes, but IBM has an app coming out soon to alleviate the issue!

Really, I love Apple computers. But I think Apple could poop in a box and people would buy it. This laptop is super thin, that's it. Don't see how anyone would want this over a mac book pro. You could buy a much better featured laptop for that money, only thing is it wouldn't fit in an envelope.

Speaking of wireless internet, what if you're traveling somewhere and your hotel doesn't have wireless, only ethernet? I run into that quite a bit to be honest.

I think Pared is right. I see this as the traveling mac for people that either get on a Wi-Fi spots and don't have broadband, or professionals that need a computer while they are not in the office.

Just because some of you don't want it, doesn't mean there's not a market for this. I think the market may be too small right now. And MacBook is too far ahead of its time.

I see the Air being the first run where it's not hugely successful. But in the second version, probably later this year or next, they offer things people need in a computer, like an ethernet port and some other features.

The other problem is the public expectation of Apple. With the iPhone and iPod, the public tends to end-alls. The iPod is the end-all MP3 player or the iPhone as an end-all cell phone.

So when a product comes along geared at a niche market, it gets blasted because it's not an end-all product.

Yeah, I am knocking it because it doesn't make any sense for an Apple product. Macs are already a niche product, this is sub-niche (if that's a word). The Air is for Starbucks lobby drinkers.

I see the Air being the first run where it's not hugely successful. But in the second version, probably later this year or next, they offer things people need in a computer, like an ethernet port and some other features.

And then that's when it will be more appealing for Apple's type of customer.

Mac Air doesn't do anything special other than it's thin. All laptops are getting thinner and thinner every year. No firewire, no ethernet, no dvd playing (so you can pay Apple to rent movies now) , 1 usb .

Can't see how someone would want one over a mac book or mac book pro. Why limit yourself on what you can do? Just so you can say you have one.
