Besides Juno Not a lot of box office magic with these films either: Figures are US Gross:
    Michael Clayton-$49 million
No Country For Old Men-$65 million
    Juno-$131 million
    Atonement-$49 Million
    There Will Be Blood-$35 million

Based on those figures, I would say only Michael Clayton performed below expected at the box office.

I really can't believe that Juno made so much money, not because it isn't good but it didn't seem like a movie that a lot of people would go see. I'm glad it was successful though.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

Juno was a hit exclusively through word of mouth. I saw it last year but for many it was the middle of January if not towards the end before the ball got rolling. Also it got compared to Little Miss Sunshine which most probably didn't see but they figured they better not miss this one.

How I find out about movies is mostly through trailers at semi-independent movies theaters here in Dallas (The Magnolia and Angelika Film Center) And then I probably won't see a movie under 81 on Rotten Tomatoes. I use that site almost as often as I use wikipidia at this point but maybe I'm outside the norm.

Please, if you haven't seen the movie yet, go see Once. It's a quasi-musical but it's a great great great movie and the main song in it won an Oscar.

Do yourself a favor and watch it.

                That's harsh. I'll watch anything above a 60.

its real real good, about a guy who has a love for music and basically loves this girl and they share a common interest, music

not to mention it has one of the most beautiful songs ever that won an Oscar..

I thought Jon Stewart was funny.

He was the only reason I watched the Oscars. I personally don't care which celebrity gets what award. It makes no difference to me.

And the fact that people aren't willing to see these in theaters is the reason why some people believe the movie-going public is becoming dumber. They must be told what to see by massive ad campaigns and are only willing to see movies that do not make you think.
the movies you listed here came out awhile ago, and are already on dvd. When the movies up for awards are still in theaters, and they are all dark dramas that people would rather watch at home, then it's no wonder why no one gives a damn about the oscars.

With all the options for entertainment now, people can wait to curl up and watch a deep and dark drama DVD at home like reading a book. People like seeing comedies in theaters because they get people laughing together. I saw the simpsons movie in the theater, and superbad, and one of the jackass movies. Part of the appeal is how the audience reacts to jokes. Jokes are funnier, and you have a good time. Same with action movies, they are just badass on the big screen with loud surround sound systems. Watch the same movie at home, and for most people, it's not really the same.

If the DVD sales for these movies are horrible, then fine, people are stupid and can't like anything other than cheap hollywood laughs. I figure that people just don't feel like watching this stuff in theaters, when you can wait for a few months for the DVD.

I think I must have missed your theater vs. home watching point. That makes sense.

I liked this movie, but was surprised at the BO figures as well.
