And to add to that.....his previous album wasn't that great and this album was panned by critics and it still went plat. His following 3 albums went platinum and his compilation CD was debuted in the top 10 on the Billboard charts. So it wasn't like he was some lower tier MC.

But to beat me, he's going to have to kill me. And to kill me, he's gonna have to have the heart to stand in front of me. And to do that, he's got to be willing to die himself. I don't know if he's ready to do that." -
Re: Revisiting the Jay-Z vs. Nas saga
Whoa now, yeah going plat is rare nowadays but platinum is platinum....nobody says "he only went platinum" lol people can buy a mansion off platinum....even a platinum single (see Bubba Sparxx "Ugly")
But yeah, it was panned by critics....but it was definitely a "successful album" from Nas......Its funny how people get so caught up in saying things b\c its the thing to say (not directed toward anyone here) "Nas doesnt sell", "Nas fell off", "Nas is broke".....lol dude is straight...hes one of the best\ most sucessful artists ever.
The argument was never about him being a rich or successful artist at the time. I only stated that he wasnt as successful as Jay (or DMX or Em) at the time and was clearly seen as the underdog and thats part of the reason people think he won the battle.Comment

Re: Revisiting the Jay-Z vs. Nas saga
Selling a million records is a feat but lets not go crazy. First, Over 400 artists went platinum or gold during that year. It was the height of the CD buying craze and before Napster hit the scene. Like I said before no one is saying that selling a million records is bad but dont try to spin it like a great success when plenty of artists were doing it that year. ****, JT Money, Lil Troy and Silk the Shocker had platinum albums that year.
Between Cash Money and No Limit putting out a platinum album every month to Lil Troy going plat on the strength of a single he didn't even appear on, and you have the late 90s. A flashy CD cover and a solid single and you went plat.Comment

Re: Revisiting the Jay-Z vs. Nas saga
It seems like yall are equating the talent of the artist with the signifigance of going platinum lol. Yeah Lil Troy and Cash Money went platinum...so did alot of TERRIBLE artists, i mean I dont even have to go down that list....and im not arguing at all that it was easier back then b\c yeah, people actually bought CDs.
But going platinum has always been the standard for a SUCCESSFUL album....its almost like the movies, Meet The Spartans SUCKED....but it was #1 for weeks and made its profit back...like it or not...it was a SUCCESS. Now what the people thought of it? thats thier opinion. Going platinum has never been a afterthought....never....its never not been a big deal....i promise you....Comment

Re: Revisiting the Jay-Z vs. Nas saga
First off... lmao @ Takeover being better than Ether... please take a listen to the 3rd verse of Ether and understand why Jay-Z went on the radio with his voice shaking, mumbling, losing his words, and apologizing. Ether was scathing and hit harder than a song about having someone's sloppy seconds.
"I uuhhh... I had to... uhh.. yeah well... i met his level of disrespect with my own level of disrespect... uhh... cuz.. ya know? i don't wanna body slam dude when i see him in McDonald's and uhh... my momma made me apologize so.. uhh"
ROFL @ Angie Martinez's disappointment when the streets spoke and declared Nas the victor.
".. and I admit, that wasn't the same confident Jay that's usually in here.." - Flex
That whole "i been in the game 5 years" gets a NEGRO PLZ from me... His fushniken rapping years will never be forgotten... EVER. Thanks Jaz.
"I will not lose, for even in defeat" - Jay-Z... I mean when you admit you lost, what else is there for fans to defend.
when Nas was Escobar, lyrically, he was uneffwitable.. even Jay-Z's God (Biggie) thought so after he was surprised he won lyricist of the year @ the Source Awards

"I hate beans but **** it, Kiss gon eat"Originally posted by BlzerLet me assure you that I am a huge proponent of size, and it greatly matters. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise.
If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)Comment
