Saying anyone in any field or profession is overrated is always an opinion. There is no case in which calling someone overrated is fact.

I don't need to say in my opinion really. What makes him great anyway?

Ear Drum was really good and I was surprised.

I found a box set of The Roots called "Do This Well". It has songs from their early days and original and remix versions of some of their album cuts.

in jmood's defense, you've been gettin a bit more up in arms about this than him, lol. post what you got, we're all discussing here. as i mentioned, i'm not as hard on him as jmood but i tend to agree and am curious to what you're thinking also. personally, "subject matter" isn't enough to make anyone good. i don't think that should even be listed. what he has to say is great, especially in today's rap world, but it's only worth mentioning if everything else is in order so that's icing on the cake. you'll have to explain the difference between "word play" and "rhyme scheme". do you mean timing or something?

again, far from garbage but far from GOAT also and a lot put him closer to GOAT than he deserves.

Nobody puts him that close to being GOAT, first of all.

Second of all, I'm defending Kwe so hard because he's one of my favorites...his album with Hi-Tek basically got me through middle school without killing myself.

Word play includes clever similes and metaphors...rhyme scheme is how you structure your writing, essentially.

I'll give you some of my favorite lines by him..

"Kweli -- spruce to the tree, Bruce to the Lee
the real emcee, that your favorite rapper used to be

One by one I knock 'em out like Schoolly D - my rhymes is eulogy
A flea could move a tree, before ya think ya movin me
I black and blue emcees - actin new to me, get smacked stupidly
That lack skills, like the black community lack unity (uh)
Still my rhymes heard like Ali DePhrase
Step off the stage to shouts of "Kweli boomayyay!!""

You get replaced in this game, by Kweli

Place the face with the name
These cats drink champagne and toast to death and pain
Like slaves on a ship talking about who got the flyest chain"

Like thoughts out the back of my mind
                        Going back in some time
Like when you used to cut and had to go to the back of the line
                        Look back and you find
Tracks that make you relax and recline
Now cats rap about packing a nine
                        When they lacking divine
                        Inspiration
Running out of topics of conversation

exactly... like jmood this isn't the first time I've had this discussion so you can't think everyone thinks like you, 3rdAnswer... or more importantly, that everyone that doesn't is attacking you or something. you're pretty heated about the thought that he may be overrated. I don't really get why.

Anyway, he's got some great tracks which will prove he's got some great flows and lines. Hell, he's even got some garbage tracks with some great lines. No one is saying he has no skill or place in the game at all. Overrated is like grading on a curve... you have to define the curve if you want to say that it's not true. Even now, we have no idea where you place him since you don't think he's the "GOAT" but generally speaking, from people I've talked to, I think he's overrated. It's possible I don't think he's any better than you think he is as doubtful as that may be.

                                Overrated does not equal bad.
