I think "Sex, Love, & Pain" was the best R&B CD last year but I do think "Street Love" was a really good album. It was filled with solid tracks.

Anyways there are some good songs these days but my one complaint about the genre these days is that most of the guys all sound the same. It's not even really all that great singing either. That's not to say they don't have talent because they do it's just that it's so cookie cutter. I also miss using, you know real instruments. I mean soul music shouldn't be pre-packaged IMO.

Exactly, its getting harder and harder to say "damn, that's a really good R&B song" these days

        Re: Fans of R&B/Soul Music

I agree with today being much more R&B and the vast majority of music has turned to technology as opposed to real music.

I enjoy the older music but I like hearing the direction that current R&B is going.

I agree that today's artists can fit into a "cookie cutter" mold. What I look for in artists is whether or not I feel what they're saying. Here's what I look for:

        Passion
        Quality of voice, uniqueness
        Music/beat
        Lyrics

Donell Jones kills it with "Guilty by Suspicion" and "My Apology". You feel everything he is trying to say about his problems in those songs...everything. He's one of the guys who can fully incorporate all of these in his songs.

I think Musiq, Lyfe Jennings, and Jaheim are the biggest ones holding down old school R & B...

there are some others I cant think of now

That's why I always liked Maxwell. He really stood out above the rest and had a decidedly old school sound both musically and vocally.
Like with everything, that's mainstream people who all sound the same. Guy's like Raheem Devaughn, Eric Roberson, Dwele etc all have distinct voices. Radio people want the cookie cutter R&B to go along with their cookie cutter rap so that they can just have a new top 30 every month and no one will be able to tell the difference.

If you like more old school R&B like Marvin and Al Green, buy or download D'angelo's two cds, Brown Sugar and Voodoo.

Yep, any idea if he has anything new on the horizon, I heard he's like 300 lbs now.

Not sure. When he was on Snoop's Blue Carpet Treatment CD I heard that he was back in shape, off drugs, and working on a new CD. Haven't heard any recent updates but the guy needs to come out with something. It's been 8 years!

If we're not just talking about little known talent then yeah, these three are at the top of the list. I'm a HUGE fan of John Legend too.

I'm still feeling Jill Scott, but don't play her newest CD around the kids... Jilly from Philly got turned out by somebody and she's telling the world.

Chrisette Michelle is surprisingly good too. Not feeling the whole CD but there are more than a few real nice tracks.

Funny you created this thread. I was thinking about doing a 64-tourny of the best all-time best/favorite R&B songs.
