Re: Lil Wayne's "Carter III" expected to move 1 mil units in first week!

Just got the CD its not a classic not a coaster. Its a good CD to burn through about 6-7 songs I may or may not get sick of or could possibly grow on me.

So basically this Carter III is meh....neither here nor there. But def def not garbage. There are worse albums out recently or coming soon that will undoubtedly take the crown for worst album of the summer.

And to touch on someones earlier post regardless of the public perception nobody can MAKE a person enjoy music without some sort of talent. Lil Wayne has been grinding out good albums and mixtapes for the past few years and if its just mindless sheep buying and agreeing with his "hottest rapper alive" status what makes him so different than all the other artists out there claiming they are the best. On the flip side what about the artists who leave it up to us the listener like Andre 3000, Joe Budden...etc

Nobody but maybe Kanye West or Jay-Z can come near his record sales and tour numbers. Maybe throw 50 cent in there if you want to keep it relevant.

In case anybody cares, this is how I reviewed the album.

      Tha Carter III Review

As much as this album was hyped up I was disappointed when the tracklisting came out and Jesus Himself was not featured on any of the tracks. I am definitely not a Lil Wayne fan by any means but I made a deal with a friend promising that I would review this album. I went track by track and I will add closing comments, so with no further delay, Tha Carter III:

      3 Peat
Decent intro song, it has a similar beat to many intro songs on albums from artists who have not put out material in a while. Nothing real special about this song though, a couple odd bars but that’s to be expected. At parts it seems like he tries to rap passionately on the track but there’s no real substance other than his voice. [6/10]

      Mr. Carter
I expected to be blown away by this track, after all it is Jay-Z and Wayne collaborating on the track. Lil Wayne spits probably his best verse on the album with the first verse of the song. “Man, I got Summer hating on me cause I'm hotter than the sun/ Got Spring hating on me cause I ain't never sprung/ Winter hating on me cause I'm colder than ya'll/ And I would never, I would never, I would never Fall/ I'm being hated on by the seasons/So f**k ya'll who hating for no reason!” His second verse is not as good as his first and we find him deviating from the serious subject matter as the verse ends with some bad bars and a screwed final bar which doesn’t really fit the entire song at all. Jay-Z spits a solid verse but not near the potential that I expected to hear from him. Overall the track is probably one of the best on the album but falls short of its potential. [8/10]

      A Milli
Well I guess this would be the equivalent to 50 Cent’s “I Get Money”. The beat isn’t really much of a beat but a loop of the words “A Milli.” But it’s very popular and has pretty much every artist hopping on it to spit a freestyle from Jadakiss to Jay-Z to even Will Smith. If you concentrate on the beat you can find yourself annoyed quickly. Wayne’s lyrics on this song are pretty bad as well with pretty bad metaphors such as “And I be the sh*t/Now you got loose bowels/ I don’t owe you like two vowels” [6/10]

      Got Money
Well you would think a collabo between Lil Wayne and T-Pain would probably dominate the billboards while receiving an infinite amount of club and party play but this song is nothing short of disappointing. The hook pretty much sucks which is what T-Pain makes a living off. And don’t expect lyrics to save this song. “I wear so much ice they yell skate Wayne!” Please… [4/10]

      Comfortable
One of the three really standout songs on this album. Anchored by Kanye West’s production and a smooth hook by Babyface this song could really be a radio hit. It’s much better than the lead single “Lollipop” off the album. Don’t be surprised to hear this one on the radio in a month. [8/10]

      Dr. Carter
Swizz Beatz delivers a solid beat on this track, different from the typical party beats we get from him. When the woman was describing the first patient, I could almost swear she was talking about Wayne. Anyway, the beat is solid, it almost sounds like a good story telling beat but Wayne doesn’t utilize it as his lyrics don’t quite live up to the potential of this song as he shifts back and forth mid verse from the subject matter to either playing himself up or talking about women. [7/10]

      Phone Home
This song is terrible. Terrible sci-fi sounding hook…this song is really out there. He starts rapping and really gets off on a tangent talking about whatever seems to come into his head. [3/10]

      Tie My Hands
Thank Robin Thicke for making this song so good. He sings a wonderful, catchy hook that you can find humming or going around your head all day. The beat is really mellow which really adds to the effect of this song. Wayne seems to take the burden of disaster-struck New Orleans on his back, but honestly it seems completely unnecessary. I feel like Wayne really is not the type of figure that can handle that responsibility or provide a really good single representative of the city. Regardless, the lyrics are not bad on this track as he rides the beat fine with pretty real lyrics to make this song the best one on the album. [9/10]

      Mrs. Officer
Another pretty bad song focusing on Lil Wayne having a sexual fantasy with a police officer… This song is absolutely destroyed by Bobby Valentino’s hook with him impersonating a police siren. No, don’t think KRS-One…It is very annoying and ridiculous sounding. Wayne really tickles himself with some of his lyrics on this track especially when he asks for her phone number or refers to beating the lady officer like Rodney King…ouch… C’mon now. [4/10]

      Let the Beat Build
Another song that screams Kanye West as it comes through the speaker. Unfortunately Wayne did not do this beat justice. He could have really destroyed this beat but instead his flow fluctuates periodically on the track. The hook (if you can call it that) is really weak. Wayne rambles a bit on this track as well with subpar lyrics. He picks up steam at about 4 minutes through the track but only for about 30 seconds of satisfaction before he reverts back to his weak flow on the track. [6/10]

      Shoot Me Down
      D. Smith produces and sings the hook on this track and it’s another solid R&B feature on the album. Another track that will probably be on repeat in a lot of people’s CD players. Lil Wayne is actually overshadowed by a very good feature from D. Smith on this track. [8/10]

      Lollipop
Everybody’s heard this song as it has flooded the radio and clubs for the past couple months. It is actually one of the worst songs on the album. The hook “sounds” good but is pretty bad. Wayne raps with the auto-tune in his voice made famous by T-Pain. His lyrics are terrible on this song which leads me to believe that he was probably high or drunk when he recorded this song just because it sounds real sloppy. [4/10]

      La La
David Banner produced this song and it really does not fit this album. Wayne floods this song with unnecessary, childish similes. The beat is sort of odd as well. Wayne sort of switches up his flow to really southern/Texas style and it makes the song an odd selection to make the album. Brisco and Busta also drop by on this track to outshine Wayne on this track. Brisco’s flow fits the beat much more than Wayne’s does and Busta stays consistent with his flow like he always is. [4/10]

      Playing with Fire
WTF is this song? I am convinced Wayne did not write these lyrics down and he was drunk and/or high when he stepped into the booth and just started rapping (if you may) whatever came into his head. He was all over the place on this track. [3/10]

      You Ain’t Got Nothin’
This song does not belong on the album. Period. This is a mixtape song. The beat is a mixtape beat. Fortunatley Fabolous really delivers on this song with tight punchlines and metaphors like “Take this family for a joke, play them Wayan brother games/And Ima Git You Sucka, I be schemin' with this Keenan/Aimin with this Damon, I'm putting that Major Payne in/ My lil' man is on ya, Marlon and Shawn ya/ Lay the beef on his noodle, make some Luger lasagna” Dang. That’s all I have to say. Nobody else delivers on the track. Well, another minus point is the fact that this beat is old, I actually have the original song by Fabolous called “Gangsta Walk” which appears on Fabolous’s mixtape. Oh yea, this is Lil Wayne’s song. More rambling on his verse and he messes with the auto-tune on his voice again… [6/10]

      Don’t Get It
I don’t get it. Nina Simone is sampled with the intention of, I’m assuming, Wayne stressing that he does not want to be misunderstood. Unfortunately he doesn’t do a good job emphasizing that in his lyrics as he spits odd bars that make no sense. Once again I think he did not write this stuff down and just went in the booth and started rapping. “But I know you don’t understand cuz you thought Lil Wayne was Weezy but Weezy is Wayne.” That pretty much sums up the track. No, it definitely is not that wayne’s lyrics are too complicated for me to comprehend, believe me. They just don’t make sense. Now Wayne decides he’s going to talk for the second half of the track and make an effort to sound intellectual or something. He really thinks he’s a genius but tapers off periodically while admitting he’s smoking weed on the track. And then he makes a poor attempt at dissing Al Sharpton for “criticizing before improvising” which makes no sense… I honestly don’t know what he’s talking about on the track more or less. I think if Sharpton heard this he’d be more upset with the country’s education system than Wayne himself. [3.5/10]

      --Closing Comments--
The much hyped sequel to Tha Carter series just does not live up to its potential. It definitely has its moments…good and bad. The album itself does not blend together as a whole real well with some songs that just sound like they’d be better left for mixtapes. This album could have easily been cut down to 12 tracks. Wayne also does not deliver any mind-blowing lyrics, however the production is solid. The album is saturated with dry, unnecessary similes, particularly the first verse of La La and throughout other songs on the album. There’s just too many subpar songs on the album. His flow is inconsistent and he tries a lot of different things with his voice which sort of throw off the cohesiveness of the album. I don’t think this album will live up to the hype of anybody as it was hyped up to epic proportions. Sure, this album will still get play time by all fans of Lil Wayne as there are a few standout tracks on it. But it just does not live up to the hype. Overall I’d give it’s about a 6.5 out of 10.

i agree about Ghost but I wouldnt call Wayne flavor of the month though. His lasting power/appeal far outweighs any of those artists minus 50.

I just think that eventually people will get tired of hearing him because he puts out so much stuff and is a cameo-whore.

He's not the greatest rapper of all time by any means but he's still better than the majority of southern rappers.

              Does he really?

Before Gillie was hired to write Tha Carter, Lil Wayne was done.

After The Block is Hot, when Cash Money stopped putting out an album every week, he was forgotten. Hell, I can't even name a Lil Wayne song aside from Block is Hot from before Carter 1.

If Mike Jones gets a good writer, he could easily be as good as Lil Wayne.

Given that Soulja Boy wrote, rapped, and produced arguably the most mainstream rap song (ever?) at age 16, I think it's very foolish to write him off.

Granted, with the absolute dearth of quality mainstream rap the last few years, his month has lasted about 2 years, but that's more because everyone else sucks so much right now than anything else. Wayne's period where people have been on him has pretty much been from Dedication 2 until now. The only major hit albums with more than 2 singles I can think of in that time where Kanye's album and Luda's album.

UGK for one. Pimp C was a genius of his time. When they sampled beats, they actually didn't sample. They hired the real groups to come in and play within their beats. He also wrote some killer hooks. I would put them against any rap group you want to name(except RUN DMC, NWA, PE, or Outkast).

Scarface, Devin The Dude, Juvenile, Chamillionaire, Eightball & MJG, TI, CunninLynguists, Three Six Mafia, Ludacris, Trae, and Z-Ro just to name a few. Are they're garbage MC's in the south? Yes. Are they're garbage rapper in NY, LA, and the Midwest? Yes.

The thing is, some people let Wayne's simple metaphors overshadow the great ones. That seasons metaphor in Mr. Carter was average but being that it's so obvious, it stands out in front of lines that aren't as straight forward " But I'm a leave it to God not b but even u/Cause I'm a murder Y kill O and even U".

If you care to give it another go, you need to listen to Dr. Carter again. He basically explains the rap game and how to be successful in the rap game.

Got Money, Mrs. Officer, and La La don't get any play in my stereo at all. No comment on any of those songs, they are annoying and complete trash. (Sorry Busta).

Ain't Got Nothin On Me was great IMO. The concept of the song was obvious, you can pretty much tell what was going to happen by looking at it's features (Fabolous, Juelz Santana, and Wayne). Punchline festival.

And you mentioned how Don'tGetIt didn't make any sense. Despite the hook, throughout the verses he explains he doesn't care if he's misunderstood. And throughout the verses, he tries his best to 'lose' you. I gotta say I love the first verse of that song. And not that his rambling at the end of the song matters, but he actually made sense with what he was saying. When I first heard it it sounded like he was talking in circles but he really was talking about how things don't make sense (hence 'Don'tGetIt').

All of his hooks have been garbage pop music. But on Carter 1, his wordplay, punchlines, and overall lyricism were infinitely better than anything else he's done. BM Jr alone is probably better than a collection of any lines he's done before or after.

Before Tha Carter, Wayne was just poppy trash. Yeah, he wrote hooks for major hit singles, but they weren't any less gimmicky than Mike Jones.

"Bling Bling, every time I come around your city Bling bling"

"Wha wha wha wha drop it like it's hot"

"uh we on fiya we on fiya"

"I wan a hot girl" (this might have been Turk/BG)

"The block is hot, the block is hot"

Cash Money certainly had its place, and I listen to Carter 1 and 2 pretty regularly along with most of the old Cash Money hits, but before the Carter albums, Wayne was derivative gimmicks just like the rest of Cash Money, No Limit, the Houston peoples, Lil John's click, and all the rest.

He was a ghostwriter away from being Mike Jones, any No Limit rapper, or Turk.

What albums didn't go gold before 2002?

The 98-2002 was the biggest selling period in music history.

Taking 7 months to go gold in 2000/2001 was a flop of an album.

Who is calling this man a genius? I don't know where he rates by the standards of rap, but I can't believe anyone would entertain the delusion of him being the best at anything with guys like Lupe Fiasco in the mainstream. It galls me that in rap you have to do so little to be considered a genius, but in most other forms of music, you have to do so very, very much to deserve that distinction.
